An internationally trusted source of medical news and education to the healthcare professional community, seeks a CTO to guide them through a major digital transformation, including a full ground-up redesign/redevelopment of their core platforms and wider product ecosystem. With the existing platform developed predominantly in PHP and WordPress, my client is seeking to adopt a more modern tech stack that will provide greater stability, scalability, resilience and will allow them to embrace AI and provide new features and enhanced functionality.

The Role

The CTO will bridge strategy and execution, as they translate business vision and product requirements into a clear technical strategy. The CTO will then own the end-to-end digital roadmap for the new digital platform, and will advise on platform architecture, tooling and technology, before then leading and line-managing the development team through the greenfield rebuild of the platform.

This is a “sleeves rolled up” CTO role and would suit a candidate with senior engineering leadership experience (CTO, VP Engineering, Head of Engineering, Tech Lead, Principal Engineer etc.) looking to architect and own a major platform rebuild in a role that will provide real influence over product direction and company growth.

The Company

The CTO will be joining a company established nearly 10 years ago to meet a growing need for independent expert advice and cutting-edge research directly from international thought leaders. Having grown rapidly to establish themselves as a trusted global leader in this field, providing readily accessible content via a range of subject-specific websites and digital platforms, their close-knit team work remotely, but with a collaboration hub currently in London where they enjoy getting together to explore and share ideas on a monthly basis.

With a flexible approach to working and with excellent benefits and opportunities for career development and advancement, this really is an excellent time to join.

Benefits include:

  • Remote working
  • Flexible hours
  • 25 days holiday
  • Pension

What’s required of the CTO?

  • Senior engineering leadership experience gained within smaller companies where the environment is fast-moving
  • Experience of architecting modern web platforms with Node.js backend development, AWS infrastructure, Linux and containerised applications such as Docker
  • PHP/WordPress would be useful to understand the current platform
  • Python skills, especially for AI/data/automation use cases would be beneficial
  • Practical experience of implementing AI features, with an understanding of LLMs, prompt design, vector search, knowledge graphs, etc., would be advantageous

What Next?

If you’re currently a CTO, or looking to take the step up to that level of ownership and responsibility, and have any questions or would simply welcome a chat about this excellent position and company, just call me or drop me an email, as I’d love to hear from you! If, though, you think this role could be right for you and you’d like to learn more, then please apply now!

Senior Software Engineer

Full Stack - Ruby on Rails, React

Up to £120k DOE

Fully Remote - must be UK based

We’re looking for a senior, hands-on engineer who still loves being deep in the code, but is ready to play a bigger role in shaping how a product and engineering team evolves.

This is a fully hands-on role where you’ll spend the majority of your time building and shipping software in Ruby on Rails and React, while also acting as a technical role model for the team. You’ll work closely with the Head of Engineering on architectural direction, help raise the bar on engineering quality, and mentor other engineers through example.

What you’ll be doing

  • Designing, building, and maintaining high-quality software across the stack, primarily in Ruby on Rails and React
  • Taking a lead role in technical and architectural decisions, partnering closely with the Head of Engineering
  • Staying deeply hands-on while setting patterns and standards others can follow
  • Mentoring and supporting engineers across different levels through code reviews, pairing, and informal coaching
  • Collaborating closely with Product and Design to shape solutions, not just implement tickets
  • Championing testing, clean code, and maintainable systems
  • Continuously improving engineering practices, tooling, and ways of working

What we’re looking for

  • Significant experience building and running production systems with Ruby on Rails
  • Strong experience with React and modern frontend practices
  • A track record of making sensible architectural decisions in growing codebases
  • Someone who enjoys being a technical leader without stepping away from hands-on work
  • Clear communicator who can explain trade-offs and decisions to both engineers and non-engineers
  • A pragmatic mindset: focused on solving user problems rather than chasing theoretical perfection

What’s in it for you

  • Salary up to £120,000, depending on experience
  • Fully remote role, UK-based
  • A senior position with real influence over architecture and technical direction
  • The chance to work in a small, experienced team where quality and autonomy are valued
  • Space to mentor others while continuing to grow technically yourself

We’re proud to be an equal opportunities employer and encourage applications from all backgrounds.

Engineering Manager - Data Products

Technical Manager / Data Manager / Python / AWS

Not every Engineering Manager role is about running sprints or firefighting delivery issues.

This one is about building strong teams, setting clear technical direction, and helping a data platform mature in a way that is sustainable, consistent and genuinely useful to customers.

You will not be coding day to day, but this is not a hands off role either. It suits an Engineering Manager who is comfortable going deep on architecture, data models and trade offs, and who enjoys working closely with senior engineers and tech leads to get the best outcomes.

What you will be responsible for

You will lead engineering across a set of data product teams, with responsibility for both people and outcomes.

That includes:

  • Teams building and maintaining data feeds, datasets and client facing outputs
  • The evolution of shared data models and event schemas, making products more consistent and easier to extend
  • The automation and internal tooling that improves quality and efficiency, including testing, rules engines and AI assisted workflows

You will own direction and delivery across these areas, making sure teams are aligned, supported and focused on the right problems.

What you will be working on day to day

In practice, you will:

  • Own the roadmap and execution for data products spanning multiple domains such as apps, web, media, social and commerce
  • Lead teams responsible for schemas, datasets and reporting outputs used directly by customers
  • Drive improvements to data models and event structures, reducing complexity and inconsistency
  • Shape and prioritise work on automation and internal tools that reduce manual effort and raise quality
  • Partner closely with Product, Data Engineering and ML, Apps, QA and client facing teams
  • Hire, develop and support engineers and tech leads through one to ones, feedback and career development
  • Establish and improve engineering practices around observability, data quality, documentation, incident response and service levels

This role has real scope, technically, organisationally and culturally.

Who this role suits

This role is a strong fit if you:

  • Enjoy leading engineers, not just managing work
  • Have a solid technical background and like being able to challenge designs and assumptions
  • Care about building well modelled, trustworthy data products
  • Are comfortable balancing delivery, quality and long term platform health
  • Like working cross functionally and navigating real world constraints

You will likely bring:

  • Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or Tech Lead Manager in a data, platform or backend environment
  • A background in data or backend engineering, such as AWS, Python or Scala, Spark, Airflow or similar
  • Experience owning or supporting analytics, data or reporting products
  • Strong people leadership skills including hiring, coaching and performance management
  • A track record of delivering complex, cross functional initiatives

Nice to have:

  • Experience with automation or test tooling
  • Familiarity with data privacy and governance, such as GDPR or consented data

How you will work

  • Hybrid role, Manchester based
  • Two days per week in the office, the rest flexible
  • Flexible start and finish times
  • Full home working setup provided
