Civil Technical Engineering Manager - Ancillary Works

Senior - Leader
Private salary
RECENTLY POSTED

Role: Civil Technical Engineering Manager - Ancillary Works

Location: London or Bristol - With travel to SZC site

Duration: Ongoing Contract

Pay: TBC - Inside IR35 (PAYE / Umbrella)

Shape One of the UK’s Most Important Infrastructure Projects

Few engineering roles offer the chance to leave a legacy that genuinely matters.

Sizewell C is the UK’s next major nuclear power station - a nationally significant project that will deliver low-carbon electricity to around six million homes for at least 60 years, playing a critical role in the UK’s journey to Net Zero.

Following the successful delivery of Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C has now entered construction and is progressing through one of the most complex and technically demanding phases of delivery. We are looking for an experienced Civil Technical Engineering Manager (Ancillary Works) to take technical leadership of critical civil infrastructure that underpins the wider nuclear programme.

This is a senior, influential role - suited to engineers who thrive in highly regulated environments and want to operate at the sharp end of design assurance, constructability, and technical governance.

The Opportunity

As Civil Technical Engineering Manager for Ancillary Works, you will sit at the heart of the Civil Works Programme, leading the definition, validation, and assurance of civil engineering design from early requirements through to final acceptance.

You will act as the technical authority for your scope, working closely with Design Delivery Management, EDF Nuclear Services, and the wider Sizewell C Technical Directorate to ensure designs are safe, buildable, compliant, and fully integrated across the project.

This role blends deep technical credibility with strategic leadership - managing complex interfaces, guiding multi-disciplinary teams, resolving technical risk, and ensuring design decisions stand up to the highest levels of scrutiny.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

You will be accountable for the end-to-end technical leadership of Ancillary Works design, including:

  • Defining and validating Sizewell C technical requirements and specifications, working with Design Authority and EDF Nuclear Services to secure approvals.
  • Leading Design Technical Assurance across the full lifecycle, including reviews, surveillance activities, and gateway approvals.
  • Managing technical open points, design changes, and risks in line with project governance and replication principles.
  • Ensuring civil designs are fully coordinated across disciplines, including assurance of 3D and digital design deliverables.
  • Providing expert technical input into Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Technical Queries, and supply-chain communications.
  • Integrating construction methodology and constructability into design requirements and technical solutions.
  • Managing complex technical interfaces with Site Establishment, Off-Site Infrastructure, Nuclear Island programmes, and external stakeholders.
  • Ensuring compliance with SZC engineering processes, CDM regulations, and UK nuclear standards.
  • Maintaining oversight of technical risks, trends, and the risk register, providing clear and confident leadership in risk management.
  • You will be supported by specialist discipline engineers, but technical ownership and decision-making authority for your scope sits firmly with you.

Who We’re Looking For

This role is ideal for a chartered civil or structural engineer with experience delivering complex, safety-critical infrastructure - someone comfortable operating in environments where quality, assurance, and governance are non-negotiable.

You will bring:

  • Strong experience across concept, detailed design, and construction phases on major infrastructure projects.
  • Technical depth in heavy civils, reinforced concrete, structural steel, earthworks, drainage, foundations, external works, or construction logistics.
  • Proven capability leading and integrating multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Confidence managing complex technical interfaces in regulated environments.
  • A solid understanding of UK design standards and engineering best practice.
  • Excellent communication skills - able to engage credibly with designers, contractors, senior stakeholders, and regulators

Qualifications:

  • Honours degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Chartered Engineer status (MICE / MIStructE) or demonstrably working towards chartership.

Desirable experience:

  • Nuclear new-build or similarly regulated major projects.
  • Familiarity with EPR design principles and NEC contract environments.
  • Experience working on projects such as Sizewell C or Hinkley Point C.

If this sounds of interest, please APPLY NOW with your CV and a cover letter highlighting your suitability for this exciting role.
