Our client, a major UK retail bank, provides every day banking services to over 17 million retail customers. The banks expertise and services span across Business Services, Corporate banking, Wealth Management, Group Functions, Retail and Investment Banking.

On behalf of this organisation, AMS are looking for a Backend Engineers for a 6 Month contract based in London (Hybrid).

The Role & Responsibilities:

At NatWest Boxed, we’re on a mission to become the UK’s leading Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) provider powered by innovative technology and backed by NatWest’s scale and trusted financial strength.

We’re looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to lead the technical direction across one of our key BaaS missions (spanning multiple teams).

This is a hands-on leadership role, where you’ll influence architecture, set engineering standards, and help teams solve complex technical challenges while delivering real value to customers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Partner with Technology Leadership to define and drive engineering standards and foster innovation
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Engineering Managers, Architects, and Engineers to shape the future of NatWest Boxed
• Own the technical architecture and design of complex, mission-critical systems
• Lead end-to-end delivery of high-impact backend components
• Enable teams to adopt industry best practices and deliver at pace
• Work across teams and departments to resolve technical challenges
• Help shape the long-term engineering vision, always keeping customer outcomes front of mind
• Identify operational risks and drive improvements in system reliability and performance

What we require from the Candidate:

• Proven track record of identifying and solving complex business problems
• Strong technical leadership experience across large-scale projects or features
• Ability to thrive in ambiguous environments and deliver value
• Excellent communication skills-able to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Experience translating business goals into data-driven insights and outcomes
• Deep expertise in software engineering principles and message-driven architectures
• Experience building high-scale systems within Financial Services
• Background as a Senior Engineer or higher in a complex environment
