About the Role:

What will your typical day look like?

  • You will be working on projects, such as the Cabinet Office WordPress support contract, to keep our clients’ systems up-to-date, available, resilient, secure, performing well and cost effective.
  • Working to improve the efficiency of our infrastructure related processes
  • At times you’ll need to work together with clients’ own internal teams and with any external infrastructure teams that Affinity may partner with.
  • Putting together infrastructure design documents at the start of projects, with a view to getting these signed off by the client and then acting as the basis for infrastructure build.
  • Building infrastructure on new projects through the use of Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, etc. This will also include continuous integration processes, server provisioning, etc.
  • Imparting knowledge and experience to other Affinity team members, both verbally and also captured in tools such as Jira Confluence, where we would like to build up a repository of DevOps how-tos, best practices, etc.
  • Opportunity to work as a team lead where other Affinity team members are involved in DevOps.
  • Providing AWS and Azure thought leadership and mentoring in both advisory and delivery contexts.
  • Supporting out-of-hours rotas to provide support coverage for contracts in place with Affinity.

About you:

General requirements:

  • Willingness to provide on-call rota coverage of emergency support (24/7/365)

  • Ability to work flexible hours from time to time, for specific projects or tasks

  • UK based and resident in UK for last 3 years (given some client-driven security clearance requirements)

  • The role is fully remote, though visits to clients and to our office in Cornwall will occasionally be required

Technical must-haves:

  • Commercial experience of AWS, including services such as Amazon VPC, Amazon RDS, Amazon ElastiCache, Amazon EC2, Amazon ECS/EKS, Amazon EFS, AWS IAM, Amazon CloudFront, Amazon S3, AWS CodePipeline, Amazon GuardDuty, AWS Security Hub, AWS Cost Explorer, etc.

Were looking for a Senior Engineer - Materials & Processes with a strong non-metallic materials engineering background, to join our materials and test team to support the production and development of next generation composite aero structures, ice protection and transparency products. The role will be based in the Materials, Coatings and Test (MCT) team within the wider Engineering and Technology department and report to the Functional Team Leader.

The role as a Senior Engineer - Materials & Processes will support the business and engineering team, with non polymer materials science and processing knowledge and guidance. The role will provide a deep understanding of the interactions between processing parameters and material properties of Acrylics, Polycarbonates and adhesives, being able to guide new technology test plans and current production deviations.

There will be occasional travel, national and international, required to support customer visits and other GKN sites. You will also support the work of the business to establish safe working practices and necessary level of documentation. You will be involved with projects from the planning / assembly / instrumentation / commissioning phase though to successfully performing and reporting the test. You will also be responsible for providing specialist support to existing programmes within your field of expertise, helping to resolve manufacturing issues and supporting continuous improvement efforts.

You will have a proven track record of leading and delivering technical work, with strong communication skills being confident working with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including non-technical audiences.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Designing, developing, and validating infrastructure automation components for the NSoIT(D) platform.

  • Writing production-grade automation using:

    • Python 3 (core automation logic)
    • Ansible (deployment)
    • Jenkins (CI/CD & build pipelines)
    • Bash & PowerShell (Linux & Windows automation)
  • Reverse-engineering existing applications and manual build processes into fully automated, zero-touch deployments.

  • Building automation for server, network, and storage platforms across multiple vendors.

  • Creating high-quality technical documentation and design artefacts.

  • Supporting system testing and resolving live service issues.

  • Working in an Agile delivery environment using JIRA and Confluence.

  • Collaborating closely with infrastructure, service management, and security teams.

Essential Skills & Experience

You’ll need at least 12 months’ hands-on experience (within the last 3 years) in most of the following:

  • Advanced Python 3 development for production automation.
  • Configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.
  • Bash and PowerShell scripting.
  • Automated deployment across server, network, and storage environments.
  • Large-scale infrastructure environments.
  • Troubleshooting complex hardware and software issues.
  • Agile development practices.

Plus:

  • Strong experience with advanced Python & PowerShell features (Workflows, DSC, Bare Metal Deployment).

  • At least one current professional certification, such as:

    • CCNP (or equivalent networking cert)
    • VMware VCP (or equivalent virtualisation cert)
    • RHCE / RHCA (Linux)
    • OCA or formal software development certification
  • Excellent communication skills - because automation still involves humans.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.

  • Active SC Clearance (mandatory).

  • Solid MS Office skills.

Desirable Extras (Nice-to-Haves)

  • Experience with JIRA, Confluence, and Bamboo.
  • Background in UK Public Sector / Defence, ideally Defence Digital.
