An experienced Mechanical Design Engineer role in a specialist design consultancy delivering engineering solutions within the materials handling and process industries.
Established in 2012, the company supports a range clients of major blue-chip clients including Holcim, Tarmac, British Sugar, Unilever, to general fabricators. We specialise in providing design services for bulk materials handling systems and associated plant infrastructure and steelwork.
This role will involve the delivery of technically robust, compliant design solutions across a range of bespoke projects. You will contribute across the full project lifecycle, from concept development through to detailed design for manufacture, installation, to the design by our clients.
Where appropriate, a hybrid working model will be in place, with primarily remote working and periodic attendance at the office and client sites as required (subject to suitable home work station and environment).
The Role
You will be responsible for the mechanical design and detailing of plant layouts, bulk materials handling systems, and associated equipment. The role requires a strong understanding of fabrication design, plant layout and detailing, structural steelwork, plant integration, and design for manufacture.
You will also provide technical input to projects, ensuring designs meet applicable standards, specifications, and operational requirements.

Develop mechanical designs from concept through to detailed engineering definition
Produce and manage design deliverables, including: * 2D CAD layouts * 3D CAD models and assemblies * General arrangement and layout drawings * Detailed fabrication and manufacturing drawings * P&IDs, mechanical schematics and flow diagrams * Bills of materials and other technical lists * Manufacturing aids (CNC laser profiles etc) * Mechanical and process calculations * Integration of point cloud and 3D scan data into design models * Ensure designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and client specifications
Generate project documentation, including user manuals, mechanical certification dossiers, quality plans, production programmes and manufacturing procedures
Apply design for manufacture, assembly, operation and maintainability principles to all work
Collaborate with multi-disciplinary in-house and external teams, including electrical, civil, and process control engineers
Liaise with suppliers and fabricators to ensure accurate interpretation and implementation of design intent
Support project delivery in line with programme, budget, and technical requirements

Experience in the design and layout of equipment such as: * Hoppers, chutes, and silos * Belt conveyors and bucket elevators * Rotary plant (mills, dryers, coolers, kilns or similar)
Strong capability in structural steelwork layout and detailing, calculations by Structural Engineer, including: * Equipment support structures and skid assemblies * Access systems (platforms, staircases, ladders, handrails) * Portal frame structures / buildings * Experience in pipework design and routing within industrial plant layouts
