Key responsibilities:
Develop programmable logic files using ABB’s PCM600, Schneider electric’s
Easergy Pro, SEL’s AcSELerator Quickset, and DIGSI 5.
Understanding of 3 phase power systems and standard electrical equations.
Reading of protection studies, determining pick up & drop off currents,
current & voltage transformer ratios, circuit breaker trip times in both definite
time and IEC curve trip times.
Reading of electrical schematics to identify problems and tracing them to
their root cause to solve issues.
Liaise with project managers to ensure projects meet technical requirements,
outlined in specification and tech subs.
Communication with a multi-disciplinary team, coordinating with design,
production, test, and EMS (energy management system) engineers, to
ensure deadlines are met for product delivery, while ensuring high quality
integrated product.
Testing of switchgear functionality, inputs and outputs are activated as
expected based on the programmable logic defined in programmed file.
Secondary inject testing of CT (current transformer) proving circuit breaker
tripping operation times and comparing results to expected trip times outlined
by protection study, calculated by IDMT curve equations.
Build an understanding of switchgear function and general operation,
interoperate site wide SLDs (Single line diagrams) to gain understanding
power flow and cross communication between switchboards.
Read in house wiring drawings to fault find a troubleshooting issues that
arise during commissioning and post hand-over.
Presentation of projects to clients in FWT (factory witness test) proving
products meets requirements before dispatch, answering any relevant
questions, and making modifications post FWT based on feedback received.
Conduct SAT (site acceptance test) to clients ensuring product is fully
functional, once accepted and installed on-site.
Provide client support, travelling to site resolving outstanding issues that
have been highlighted in commissioning process before energization of
product.
Build up to gaining proficiency in IEC61850 communication standard both
MMS (Client server) and GOOSE (Peer-peer). Using tools such as IED scout
to troubleshoot issues on the networks of IEDs (protection relays).

Essential requirements
Electrical and Electronic Engineering BENG/ MENG, or other relevant
degree, or Distinction grade HND (higher level diploma)
1 Year industrial placement in manufacturing or design or work experience in
a relevant field.
Ability to read electrical schematics.
Positive attitude, desire to learn, and grow as an engineer in this field.
Willing to travel across UK and Europe occasionally, as required.

Desired requirements
Interest in programmable logic for example Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
Good communication and presentation skills.
Experience wiring control panels of any description.
Good time management with ability to work under pressure to meet
deadlines.
Experience with primary/secondary injection of current and voltage.

  • Deep knowledge of switchgear design, power distribution, and mechanical/electrical components.

Contract and Benefits

Permanent, full-time (38 hours per week) with potential overtime.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must be time-served in an Electrical/Engineering discipline and/or qualified to a minimum of NVQ Level 3 Diploma in an Electrical/Engineering discipline.

It is essential that applicants have:

  • Proven experience in electrical installation and reactive breakdown environments
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills
  • A strong understanding of switchgear, PLCs, VSDs and control panels
  • A self-motivated and flexible approach to work
  • A full driving licence and the ability to travel to customer sites

Role Summary

The Reactive Breakdown Engineer is responsible for responding to electrical faults and breakdowns, carrying out diagnostics, repairs, and restoration of electrical systems at industrial sites. The role also includes supporting installation activities where required. The successful candidate must be able to read and interpret electrical schematics and complete all Company documentation, including Engineer Report Sheets and Daily Time Sheets, accurately and on time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to reactive breakdowns and callouts, diagnose electrical faults, carry out repairs, and return systems to service safely and efficiently
  • Organise and manage jobs on-site to ensure work is completed on time, within budget, and to a high standard
  • Comply with all customer site rules and procedures, including attending site inductions where required
  • Communicate professionally with customers and suppliers, providing high levels of customer service and promoting the Company positively
  • Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with Company ISO Management Systems and contribute to the continual improvement culture
  • Maintain a strong Duty of Care and uphold high standards of Health and Safety, ensuring personal actions do not place colleagues, customers, or the public at risk
  • Ensure Company vehicles, tools, and equipment under your control are maintained in good condition and that the Company Housekeeping Policy is followed
  • Support other departments within the Company as required
  • Undertake additional responsibilities when required, such as First Aider, Employee Committee involvement, etc.
  • Maintain or obtain additional licences, training, or qualifications as required (e.g. Forklift, Scissor Lift/Boom)
  • Carry out reasonable ad hoc duties in line with the operational needs of the Company
