Come and see why Fortune magazine consistently ranks The Trade Desk among the best small to medium sized workplaces globally.

What we do

Our Software Engineers are end to end owners who have the opportunity to participate in many aspects of designing, building, and delivering data focused products for our stakeholders.

At The Trade Desk, we believe in building the back end infrastructure of our platform with a focus on quality at scale. This means whether we are building parts of our client facing applications, internal custom solutions for our own team members, or model pipelines for bidding optimisations, we are making sure that we have infrastructure, development, and tools to do it right and efficiently.

Our system performs all day, every day serving global traffic. We build a distributed system in a highly collaborative environment, utilising a broad range of technologies. Our back end developers work on finding solutions to algorithmic, optimisation and scale challenges in everything we do.

What you’ll do

Some of the work that you will be doing to help us deliver on our mission is:

  • Design, build, deliver and own full lifecycle development software from inception to production
  • Demonstrate a firm grasp of the entire software development lifecycle
  • Drive complex changes involving multiple components
  • Deliver quality changes, including automated tests, metrics and monitoring
  • Collaborate with team members to deliver features
  • Guide and review changes to product features in line with product roadmaps
  • Implement and maintain product features
  • Validate changes to ensure high quality product releases
  • Work in a distributed system environment
  • Understand the business objectives behind the code
  • Understand system architecture fundamentals through self directed learning
  • Lead others through example, mentorship, teaching, and/or participate in hiring activities

We are a global team with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. To complement this team, you will welcome ideas that are different from your own and be well versed in building from common ground to value, seek out, and foster invisible and visible dimensions of diversity.

Who you are

Our culture is much deeper than just having fun together (though, we do that well too ). We take pride in our engineers being trust builders, generous givers, scrappy problem solvers, and gritty pursuers of excellence. You do not have to meet all the requirements below, but we believe that people who meet most of them will have a higher likelihood of succeeding in this role:

  • You are comfortable working on an agile, distributed team spanning multiple time zones and continents.
  • You are able to communicate effectively across both technical and non technical audiences.
  • You have a solid understanding of computer science and engineering fundamentals.
  • You have experiences working with distributed systems.
  • You are proficient in one or more of the following programming languages: C#, Java, C, C++, Python, SQL, or Scala.
  • You have some knowledge of software development code editors: Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Rider) and version control systems (Git, Perforce).
  • You have 2+ years of software development, engineering experience
  • You have a Bachelor’s/Master’s level degree in a computer science or relevant engineering related field or equivalent experience. Not everyone has the same level of access to opportunities. What is most important to us is what and how you can contribute, which is why our consideration is not limited by the level of education you have.
  • You have additional nice to have experience that is not required in the following areas: database engines (Microsoft SQL Server, Postgres, AeroSpike, Vertica, Redis), building micro services, operating systems and cloud, Kubernetes, Kafka.

Variety of technical opportunity is one of the best things about working at The Trade Desk as a software engineer which is why we do not expect you to know every technology we use when you start. What we care about is that you can learn quickly and find solutions to complex problems using the optimum tools for the job. What you know is less important than how well you learn and innovate. We don’t need engineers who know all the answers; we need engineers who can invent the answers no one has thought of yet, to the questions yet to be asked.

The Trade Desk does not accept unsolicited resumes from search firm recruiters. Fees will not be paid in the event a candidate submitted by a recruiter without an agreement in place is hired; such resumes will be deemed the sole property of The Trade Desk. The Trade Desk is an equal opportunity employer. All aspects of employment will be based on merit, competence, performance, and business needs. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, marital status, age, national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition, pregnancy, genetic information, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or any other status protected under federal, state, or local law.

  • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.
  • Experience building revenue critical systems with strong observability and monitoring.
  • Ability to take a first principles approach to system design, thinking deeply about architecture, scalability, and long term maintainability.

(Nice to haves)

  • Experience building pricing engines, experimentation platforms, or optimisation systems.

Senior Software Engineer
Optimizely
London
Hybrid
Senior
Private salary
RECENTLY POSTED

Introduction

We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer for one of our CMS product teams, working from the UK, to help us shape the future of Optimizely’s products and offerings. We’re at the top of industry analyst ratings and pushing to take both the PaaS and SaaS versions of our CMS further. A big part of that push is Opal, our always on AI workforce that improves productivity for content teams. Building on that capability is one of the things that makes this moment particularly interesting. Our engineers have been working on our CMS for years, many of them because they genuinely love it, and they’re eager to take it to the next level. This is your opportunity to join them.

About The Team

You’d join a group of teams with many senior engineers who have deep product knowledge and diverse technical backgrounds. Personal and cultural fit matters as much as skills and experience here. The team collaborates closely, both remotely and in person, with a culture built around trust and open communication. We have an office in London, and if you’re based there, we’d expect you to work from the office a few days per week. If you’re elsewhere in the UK, we fully support remote work.

We care about work life balance in practice, not just on paper. We work across time zones but respect local working hours, family commitments, and your physical and mental health. There are occasions where a critical production issue or urgent release requires work outside normal hours, but that is the exception, not the norm. Many of us have been here a long time. That’s not inertia, it’s because the work stays interesting and the environment is healthy.

What You’d Do

  • Design, implement, and document software solutions that are simple, secure, scalable, and maintainable.
  • Own the operational excellence of your domain, including instrumentation, monitoring and alerting.
  • Ensure product quality through thorough automated testing.
  • Drive delivery of complex features end to end, working across team boundaries when needed.
  • Contribute to architecture and design discussions within your team and across teams, communicating decisions through design docs and knowledge sharing forums.
  • Participate in project planning, requirements gathering, design, and task refinement.
  • Handle incidents and assist our support organisation when they need engineering expertise on customer cases.
  • Bring customer perspective into technical decisions, understanding how the product is used in practice.
  • Mentor other engineers and share knowledge across the team.
  • Participate in hiring and help grow a diverse engineering organisation.

What We’re Looking For

We value personal and cultural fit as much as technical skill. You are self motivated, enjoy collaborating to find the right solution, and you think about architecture, development cost, and long term ownership when making decisions. You’re comfortable working through ambiguity, can articulate trade offs clearly, and leave projects in a state where someone else can pick them up.

Must have:

  • Typically 8+ years of professional experience with modern software development practices, though we recognise some people get there faster.
  • Strong software design and engineering fundamentals, including object oriented analysis and design.
  • Solid experience with C# and .NET, and with React on the frontend.
  • Hands on experience with CMS platforms, content modelling, or digital experience tooling. You understand the domain and the problems content teams face.
  • Experience building and operating cloud based software.
  • Already using AI tools, coding assistants, and potentially agents as part of your daily workflow to improve both quality and speed.
  • Comfortable working in an agile environment alongside designers, product managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Good communicator who enjoys solving problems together with others.

Good to have:

  • Experience with Optimizely CMS or other CMS/DXP platforms.
  • NET Core MVC.
  • SQL (particularly MS SQL).
  • Containers and container orchestration.
  • HTTP APIs, REST services, or GraphQL.
  • Experience building large, modular applications with continuous delivery.
  • A degree in Computer Science or equivalent. We care more about what you can do than what’s on your diploma.

Optimizely is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace. Optimizely is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, disability, age, or other legally protected status.

About hyperexponential (hx)

At hyperexponential, we’re building the AI powered platform that enables the world’s most critical decisions in a $7 trillion industry, which risks to take, and how to price them. These are the decisions that shape real world outcomes: whether rockets successfully launch into space, autonomous vehicles make it to market, or communities recover after major storms.

Until now, insurance has been making billion dollar decisions using outdated tools. We’re changing that. Our platform brings together data, AI, and human expertise to give insurers the fastest path from submission to decision - helping them move faster, act smarter, and take on more risk with confidence.

Backed by a16z, Highland Europe, and Battery Ventures, we’re scaling globally - already trusted by nearly 50 of the world’s largest insurers, with zero churn and billions in premiums flowing through hx.

What began as a single product in one market has rapidly evolved into a multi product, multi territory platform powering every stage of pricing and underwriting. AI is at the core of what we do - from building the world’s first domain specific AI peer programmer for insurance to shaping agentic workflows that reinvent how this industry operates.

What makes hx different is the people who build it. Here, impact isn’t tied to title or tenure; it’s defined by the challenges you take on and the discipline you bring.

About the AI Platform team

At hx, AI agents are becoming embedded across every team and product. The AI Platform team exists to make that happen safely and at scale. We own the shared building blocks that enable any technology team at hx to build, ship, and operate AI agents quickly, safely, and consistently.

We build the platform, not the agents. The reusable foundations that agent building teams depend on are: observability for end to end tracing, cost tracking, and visibility across all AI usage; gateways for unified LLM access and centralised tool routing; governance for agent identity, authorisation, cost controls, and audit logging; and developer experience through SDKs, documentation, and patterns that make spinning up a production grade agent fast and consistent.

We are a small, high ownership team that moves fast and builds for adoption. We measure success not by what we ship, but by what other teams can build because of what we ship.

What you’ll be doing

  • Observability & Evaluation: Building and evolving the platform that gives hx end to end visibility into AI agent behaviour and quality, including tracing, cost tracking, usage dashboards, and shared evaluation infrastructure that helps teams measure and improve agent performance.
  • Composition: Designing and operating the infrastructure that connects agents to LLMs and tools - unified proxies, centralised tool routing, discovery, and access governance so agent building teams don’t have to solve these problems individually.
  • Governance: Defining and implementing the identity, authorisation, and policy layer for AI agents - scoped credentials, per tool permissions, audit logging, cost controls, and trust boundary patterns that let agents operate safely as they scale.
  • Developer experience: Shaping the tools, SDKs, documentation, and patterns that make it fast for any team to go from zero to a production grade agent on the platform.
  • Adoption: Driving adoption of shared platform services across technology teams, replacing bespoke per agent integrations with consistent, well documented capabilities. Measuring impact and iterating based on what teams actually need.

What you’ll need to have done

  • Built and operated platform infrastructure used by multiple teams - API gateways, proxies, observability systems, CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, or developer platforms where adoption and reliability were your responsibility.
  • Delivered developer facing tools, SDKs, or APIs that other engineers relied on daily, with a strong focus on usability, documentation, and developer experience.
  • Worked with modern AI infrastructure - LLM integrations, agent frameworks, or AI related tooling. You don’t need to be an ML researcher, but you should have hands on experience building with AI in production, meaningful side projects, or open source, and be comfortable navigating the AI tooling landscape.
  • Operated systems with governance, security, or compliance requirements - identity models, access control, audit logging, or similar concerns where getting it wrong has real consequences.
  • Successfully driven adoption of shared services across engineering teams, replacing fragmented, team specific solutions with consistent platform capabilities, and measuring the impact.
  • Taken full ownership of initiatives end to end - from scoping and planning through to building, driving adoption, and validating success with data. Not just shipping code, but ensuring it lands.

We’re hiring at both mid (IC2) and senior (IC3) levels. If you’ve done some but not all of the above, we’d still like to hear from you.

You’re unlikely to thrive here if

  • You wait for detailed specifications before acting. This team operates in a fast moving, ambiguous space. We scope problems, make decisions, and iterate. If you need everything defined upfront, you’ll find it frustrating.
  • You prefer to work in a silo. We are a platform team. Our work only succeeds when other teams adopt it. That means constant collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and genuine interest in making other engineers more productive.
  • You see shipping code as the finish line. Here, delivery means adoption. You’ll be expected to own the full lifecycle - build it, document it, drive adoption, measure impact, and iterate.
  • You’re not energized by ownership and visibility. Every member of this team leads initiatives, communicates progress transparently, and represents their work to stakeholders. If you prefer to stay heads down and let others handle the context setting, this isn’t the right fit.

Compensation

At hx, we’re committed to salary transparency. You’ll always have clarity on pay early in the process - our Talent Partner will share details with you during initial conversations - and we’re working towards publishing salary information for all roles globally.

Because we’re building at the intersection of technology/SaaS and insurance, our roles don’t always map neatly onto traditional benchmarks. Our approach is to design compensation that’s competitive in the market, fair across teams, and aligned with the impact our people make.

Equity: We offer equity across all roles at hx, making it a significant component of total compensation.

Benefits

  • £5,000 training and conference budget for individual and group development.
  • 25 days of holiday plus 8 bank holidays (33 days total).
  • Company pension scheme via Penfold.
  • Mental health support and therapy via Spectrum.life.
  • Individual wellbeing allowance via Juno.
  • Private healthcare insurance through AXA.
  • Income protection and Life Insurance.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.

Additional perks

  • Top spec equipment (laptop, screens, adjustable desks, etc.).
  • Regular remote and in person hackathons, lunch and learns, socials, and game nights.
  • Team breakfasts and lunches, snacks, drinks fridge, and a fun office at The Ministry.
  • Exceptional opportunities for personal development and growth as we build something remarkable together.

Our commitment to Diversity

hxers are at the centre of everything we build. We know that progress depends on diverse perspectives, and we are committed to creating an environment where everyone can thrive, grow, and make an impact.

We recognize there is always more to do, and we take responsibility for shaping a workplace that is not only diverse but genuinely inclusive.

Diversity is not just the right thing to do, it is key to solving the complex challenges we choose to take on. By welcoming people from all backgrounds and experiences, we strengthen our ability to question assumptions, push boundaries, and design solutions that endure.
