About the role:

The primary purpose of the Marine Engineer is to deliver the maintenance and safe operation of all machinery on board the vessel. Responsibility spans the hull, structure, main and auxiliary machinery, electrical and electronic systems, fuel, water, hydraulics, and the planning and execution of in-season maintenance. A comprehensive level of advice and support to the onboard Engineer is provided by our two, office based, Engineering Technical staff.

Applicants should have the requisite experience and should ideally have completed an approved engineering course or a willingness to complete on within the first 12 months of employment. They should ideally hold a current Seafarer Medical Certificate or willing to be medically assessed for the position. The ability to work effectively with young people as well as the permanent and relief crew members is essential. Ship system familiarisation, child safeguarding and any necessary sea safety course refresher training will be given to the successful applicant.

The particular demand of seagoing employment requires the incumbent to be available for duty for prolonged periods and working hours necessarily need to be very flexible. Although overtime will not be recognised, the working and rest hours for the role will be within the confines of the terms of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006. The uncertain nature of the working hours are recognised by the holiday arrangements afforded.

Hydraulic System Design Engineer

Location: Peterlee (5 days onsite)
Salary: £63,000 - £80,000 per annum
Type: Permanent, full-time (with excellent permanent benefits)

We’re looking for a Hydraulic System Design Engineer to join our Client engineering team in Peterlee. You’ll be responsible for the end-to-end design and development of hydraulic systems for heavy-duty vehicles, from concept and component selection through to validation and integration.

Relocation and sponsorship can also be provided for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop hydraulic systems ensuring performance, safety, and reliability.
• Select and specify hydraulic components including pumps, valves, motors, cylinders, and hoses.
• Create and review engineering drawings, schematics, and documentation.
• Validate systems through simulation tools and physical testing.
• Translate machine application needs into clear system and component requirements.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (drivetrain, cooling, controls, installation).
• Support continuous improvement, cost-reduction, and aftermarket projects.

About You

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or similar.
• Strong experience in hydraulic system design within construction, mining, agricultural, or other heavy/off-highway equipment.
• Proven ability to design, analyse, and validate complex hydraulic circuits.
• Skilled in reading and creating schematics and technical drawings.
• Strong communicator, comfortable working across global and cross-functional teams.
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Desirable:

• Experience working with suppliers to specify/select components.
• Exposure to project leadership in complex engineering programmes.

The Role

Key Responsibilities Manufacturing Process Development & Improvement

• Develop and implement new manufacturing processes and equipment for new products
• Drive continuous improvement of existing processes and work packages
• Optimise production using Lean methodologies, including 5S, value stream mapping, and root cause analysis
• Conduct feasibility studies and develop manufacturing plans, including layouts, work cells, and facility upgrades
• Support prototype builds and resolve technical issues prior to full-scale production
• Champion best practice and continuous improvement initiatives within manufacturing

Project & Stakeholder Management

• Lead manufacturing development projects from concept to production launch
• Manage project budgets, schedules, and reporting
• Prepare and justify CAPEX requests for new equipment and tooling

Technical Leadership
