TECH-AGNOSTIC ROLE
Nuclear Safety Engineer - Dunbar, UK

About the Role

Interested in growing your engineering experience in the nuclear industry?
If you’re excited by the idea of supporting real action to help Britain achieve net zero, our Nuclear Safety Engineer role could be the opportunity you’re looking for.

The Nuclear Safety Group plays a vital role in maintaining oversight of nuclear safety at the station. The team leads the implementation of the Station Safety Case, demonstrates compliance, and carries out key plant performance activities, including specifying reactor refuelling, monitoring safety margins and providing reactor physics advice to our Operators.

In this role, you’ll focus on the development, implementation and ongoing compliance of the Station Safety Case. Working closely with colleagues in the Design Authority, Engineering and Operations teams, you’ll help ensure the safe operation of the reactors and that our safety documentation remains robust, effective and fully compliant.

You’ll report to the Nuclear Safety Group Head and take on responsibilities within the Group’s Safety Case technical area. Your work will include authoring and verifying updates to the Station Safety Case, assessing the nuclear safety implications of plant modifications, managing the Station Operating Rules and ensuring compliance with the Nuclear Site Licence. You’ll also provide advice on the safe operation of plant systems and actively promote strong Nuclear Safety Culture and Nuclear Professionalism in everything you do.

Once you’ve completed the appropriate training, you’ll also undertake a relevant role within the station’s emergency response arrangements.

Who You Are

We’re looking for someone enthusiastic, curious and keen to learn—someone who can work independently when needed but also enjoys being part of a supportive and established team. Your potential matters to us just as much as your current experience, and we’ll work with you to help you make the most of it.

You should be educated to a minimum of HNC level (or equivalent) in a relevant Engineering or Science discipline. Candidates with experience in technical roles, operations support or safety case management within the nuclear industry may have an advantage.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need to communicate technical information clearly and build strong relationships across the station and wider business. You’ll be able to work cooperatively as part of a team while taking responsibility for your own work and driving tasks through to completion. You’ll be comfortable interpreting technical information, proposing solutions and collaborating across functions to deliver them. Strong planning and organisational skills are essential, as is the ability to balance immediate priorities with longer‑term objectives and identify opportunities for improvement.

As part of your encouraged personal development, training is delivered through our accredited initial programme, using a mix of on‑site and off‑site courses, alongside structured mentoring.

Experience that would be beneficial, but not essential, includes strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal and influencing abilities, the ability to navigate differing viewpoints and reach appropriate resolutions, and a background in nuclear power plant operations or nuclear technology/engineering.

Pay, Benefits and Culture

We’re offering a salary of £45,641 to £95,993 however, the starting salary will be within the range of £45,641 - £68,958, allowing room for career advancement. You’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. We also offer an attractive pension scheme along with some great company benefits. This is a full-time, permanent position based on-site at Torness Power Station.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.

Our Values: What you can expect when you join us

As you consider joining EDF Nuclear Operations, we want you to know what drives us. Our values are more than words, they shape how we work, how we grow, and how we support one another.

We act with integrity , always choosing to do what’s right. Trust, respect, and transparency are the foundation of our culture, and we hold ourselves accountable to the highest ethical standards.

These values are not just what we believe, they’re how we work. If they resonate with you, you’ll thrive here.

Closing date for applications: Sunday 15th March 2026
