Job Role of the Multi Skilled Maintenance Engineer

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Multi Skilled Maintenance Engineer to join a highly automated, fast-paced food manufacturing site. With significant investment of over £1.2 million into the factory, this is an exciting time to join a growing and forward-thinking business that offers excellent career progression both technically and into management.

Working as part of an 8-engineer team, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving production performance across 4 production lines. This role is currently 60–70% reactive and 30% planned maintenance, with a strong focus on moving towards a more proactive maintenance strategy.

You will be responsible for both mechanical (80%) and electrical (20%) maintenance, working closely with production, quality, and engineering teams to ensure maximum uptime and efficiency.

Responsibilities of the Multi Skilled Maintenance Engineer

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance
  • Fault finding on mechanical and electrical systems
  • Working on a wide range of production machinery including:Maintaining components such as drives, motors, sensors, relays, pneumatics, hydraulics, belts, bearings, and chains
    • Hydraulic presses, mixers, conveyors, flow wrappers, heat sealers, chillers
  • Supporting continuous improvement and engineering projects
  • Leading by example within the engineering team

The role is an integral part of the site engineering team, with responsibilities to ensure safety, legislative compliance, reliability, people leadership and continuous improvement of our plant support services. Responsibilities will also include monitoring plant facilities performance, planning preventive maintenance activities to ensure a safe and reliable plant.

The ideal candidate will have excellent organisational and communication skills, with a problem-solving mindset, and a flexible approach to working in a hands-on role across a variety of plant facilities services and equipment.

The position requires proactive approach to problem-solving and failure analysis, focused on identifying opportunities for improvement and establishing failure prevention through implementation of both preventive and predictive maintenance strategies on plant services equipment, critical infrastructure and support facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensuring safety systems and practices are followed at all times, and that meaningful safety for life conversations are taking place frequently
  • Identify and manage asset reliability risks that could adversely affect operations, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Develop and implement appropriate predictive and preventive maintenance strategies based on reliability data to ensure equipment reliability and efficiency.
  • Work closely with the engineering and maintenance teams to integrate new technologies and methods that increase reliability and performance. This may involve overseeing the implementation of reliability-centred maintenance (RCM) and total productive maintenance (TPM) programs.
  • Prepare reports and documentation to record findings, make recommendations and track performance failures and improvement measures.
  • Identify and propose new technologies and processes that can improve equipment performance and reliability.
  • Analyse the failure modes of equipment and systems to prevent failures and downtime using FMECA and apply statistical analysis to predict future system reliability and risk of failure.
  • Work closely with other engineers and professionals to design out failure where necessary and ensure reliability and durability of new Capital Investment Projects.
  • Resourcing overtime and manning in line with operational requirements & management request

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Safety-conscious with the ability to identify potential hazards and take the necessary steps to reduce or eliminate the risk.
  • Strong understanding of facilities engineering principles, including both mechanical and electrical disciplines, with proven experience as a lead facilities engineer or similar role.
  • Relevant qualification (HNC or HND) in facilities engineering or a mechanical engineering discipline. A relevant electrical qualification would also be an advantage.
  • Ability to identify potential issues and develop cost-effective solutions to ensure optimal performance and longevity of system reliability.
  • Knowledge of compressed air systems, HVAC systems, industrial boilers, fire protection systems, transportation systems, and industrial baler systems would be an advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to facilitate collaboration with various stakeholders, including contractors, vendors and cross-functional internal teams.
  • Ability to use MS office (including Word & Excel) and a understanding of CMMS systems (ideally SAP).

Using your asset maps, data and tools you’ll resolve both planned and reactive operational problems in a thorough and timely manner.

This is a field-based role and you’ll be provided with a fully equipped van as you travel around the region, consistently ensuring water quality is sufficiently maintained. A large part of the role will be liaising with customers, using your skills and expertise to deliver high levels of customer service, you’ll keep them informed every step of the way, becoming the face of Anglian Water for many of our customers.

When you join the team, you’ll be provided with plenty of hands-on training and job shadowing and work towards becoming NRSWA accredited & LTO trained (licence to operate).

What does it take to be a Water Network Technician?
  • Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent)
  • Experience of working in an engineering industry, ideally providing a front-line service
  • A strong technical aptitude
  • Ideally experience of water networks, street works and leakage control

It is a design-led position within a manufacturing environment, ideal for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of products from concept through to full-scale production. You will play a key role in shaping product design, ensuring manufacturability, and supporting successful delivery into production.

The Role

You will be responsible for the full product lifecycle, with a particular emphasis on design engineering and Design for Manufacture. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will ensure that products are not only innovative but also practical, efficient, and production-ready.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading end-to-end product development, from concept design through to production implementation
  • Producing detailed designs using CAD (ideally Autodesk Inventor), with a strong focus on manufacturability
  • Applying Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles at all stages of development
  • Developing prototypes, conducting testing, and supporting validation and verification activities
  • Designing jigs, fixtures, and assembly aids to support efficient production processes
  • Acting as the key link between design and production, ensuring smooth transition into manufacturing
  • Providing hands-on technical support on the shop floor, troubleshooting design and production issues
  • Driving continuous improvement across both product design and manufacturing processes
  • Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver products to specification
  • Occasional UK and international travel as required

About You

We are looking for a design-led engineer who thrives in a manufacturing environment and enjoys seeing their designs come to life on the shop floor.You will ideally have:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent practical experience)
  • Proven experience in product design and development within a manufacturing setting (minimum 2 years)
  • Strong CAD capability (ideally Autodesk Inventor or similar)
  • A solid understanding of engineering standards and structured product development processes
  • Experience applying DFM/DFA principles in real-world applications
  • The ability to balance design intent with practical production constraints
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work cross-functionally
  • A hands-on, problem-solving mindset with a proactive approach
