Were looking for a Principal Materials Engineer with a strong non-metallic materials engineering background, to join our materials and test team to support the production and development of next generation composite aero structures, ice protection and transparency products. The role will be based in the Materials, Coatings and Test (MCT) team within the wider Engineering and Technology department and report to the Functional Team Leader.

The role as a Principal Materials Engineer will support the business and engineering team, with non polymer materials science and processing knowledge and guidance. The role will provide a deep understanding of the interactions between processing parameters and material properties of composites, Acrylics, Polycarbonates and adhesives, being able to guide and make decisions on new technology test plans and current production deviations.

There will be occasional travel, national and international, required to support customer visits and other GKN sites. Your Responsibilities as a Maintenance Engineer:

Sitting in the wider Funding Policy & Systems Team, the role will lead and support a small team of data analysts to deliver software and data systems to manage our adult skills programmes.

The Role
This role is responsible for the design, implementation, support, and ongoing improvement of IT infrastructure and associated security controls. The position combines hands-on infrastructure engineering with security responsibilities, ensuring that systems remain available, resilient, secure, and compliant with recognised standards such as ISO 27001 and GDPR-aligned controls.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement and maintain core IT infrastructure.

  • Ensure systems remain reliable, available, and performant.

  • Support servers, networking systems, and core services.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure-related issues.

  • Implement and maintain security controls across the IT environment.

  • Support endpoint protection and monitoring solutions.

About You:

  • 5+ years’ experience in an IT Infrastructure or Security Engineering role

  • Strong knowledge of: Windows Server /Active Directory / DNS / DHCP

  • Understanding of networking fundamentals (firewalls, VPNs, switching, routing)

  • Experience supporting security controls and endpoint protection

  • Strong troubleshooting and incident handling skills

  • Familiarity with ISO 27001 or security audit processes

  • Knowledge of vulnerability management and incident response

  • Relevant certifications such as Microsoft, Cisco, Security or ITIL
