Description

Hello, we’re Starling. We are proud to be the first British bank founded by a woman, Anne Boden. We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way. We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. We employ more than 3,000 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.

Our technologists are at the very heart of Starling and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment that is all about building things, creating new stuff, and disruptive technology that keeps us on the cutting edge of fintech. We are deeply committed to closing the gender gap in technology; from our partnership with Code First Girls to our internal ‘With Women’ and ‘Embrace’ networks, we actively champion diverse women in tech. We operate a flat structure to empower you to make decisions regardless of what your primary responsibilities may be, innovation and collaboration will be at the core of everything you do. Help is never far away in our open culture, you will find support in your team and from across the business, we are in this together!

The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building things, designing, discovering, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our purpose is underpinned by five Starling values: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness.

About the role

Our Technology Operations team is the first line of support for Starling Group, both internally for our colleagues and externally for our technology partners. We look after all the technical queries in our primarily Apple Mac estate that our employees and external partners raise on a daily basis, supporting the critical infrastructure of the bank, alongside the day to day needs of our teams.

In this role, you’ll get the opportunity to really understand the core functionality of the bank, working closely with our internal teams and key suppliers. It’s very important to us at Starling that staff have the best possible experience with the technology they use on a daily basis.

We deploy primarily Macs but also have some Windows PC’s in the estate, supplemented by a number of SaaS applications. Our computers are managed by a combination of Jamf and Intune, and sit on our Meraki network. We have zero physical infrastructure on site barring networking, so you won’t find Active Directory here. Externally, we support the relationships we have with key suppliers, payment schemes and banking partners; triaging and escalating as needed.

As a Technology Operations Analyst, you’ll be the face of support for technology for all staff at the bank, assisting with hybrid support for our colleagues and external partners, whilst sharing solutions that improve technology outcomes for all.

You also will:

  • Provide 1st line technology support/security issues raised in Slack, email and face-to-face office interactions.
  • Facilitate onboarding training for new employees: ensuring staff have access to the equipment, software and services they need to work efficiently.
  • Help the team to manage asset inventory, procurement, repairs, auditing and licensing.
  • Computer hardware provisioning from returned stock.
  • Arrange collection of leavers hardware.
  • Perform daily office equipment checks, ensuring all conference rooms are fully functional at the start of each day. Check display TVs are working properly.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience of supporting either macOS or Windows is a must.

  • Adept at coping in a technically complex and fast-changing environment

  • An interest in and suitable understanding of Starling’s technology.

  • Exposure to incident management processes is beneficial.

  • Provide 1st line technology support/security issues raised in Slack, email and face-to-face office interactions.

  • Facilitate onboarding training for new employees: ensuring staff have access to the equipment, software and services they need to work efficiently.

  • Helping the team to manage asset inventory, procurement, repairs, auditing and licensing.

  • Computer hardware provisioning from returned stock.

  • Arranging collection of leavers hardware.

  • Experience in operational support of suppliers and outsourced vendors is beneficial.

We enable our customers to manage their money 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Whenever they need us, we will be there. As such, we are looking for people who can commit to 37.5 hours a week between 7am-10pm Monday to Sunday.

Benefits

  • 25 days holiday (plus take your public holiday allowance whenever works best for you)

  • An extra day’s holiday for your birthday

  • Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off

  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year

  • Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme

  • Life insurance at 4x your salary & group income protection

  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton

People with a broad ability to apply themselves to a multitude of problems and challenges, who can work across teams do great things here at Starling, to continue changing banking for good.

As a Cloud Security Engineer at Starling, you’ll be building and supporting tooling and infrastructure that spans across AWS and GCP supporting our internal operations and interfacing with other teams to deliver the services that support our business.

Requirements

We are seeking an experienced Cloud Security Engineer who believes that great security is built, not just configured. At Starling, security is a fundamental engineering pillar, and we’re looking for a practitioner who thinks like a developer.

While we are looking for deep cloud expertise, we are also highly interested in candidates with strong programming skills and a background in software engineering who want to apply those talents to security. This is a hands-on role for a builder who excels at writing clean, scalable code to automate away manual gates. You will work across AWS and GCP, developing the internal tools, guardrails, and services that empower our engineering teams to ship securely without sacrificing speed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineer Secure Foundations: You will lead the design and implementation of critical security services, with a heavy focus on building robust Identity and Access Management (IAM) systems and automated, API-driven certificate management workflows.
  • Security-as-Code & Scalability: Leveraging a software-first philosophy, you will develop and maintain high-quality, scalable security tooling and middleware within ECS and Kubernetes environments, ensuring security logic is integrated directly into the deployment pipeline.
  • Collaborative Code Ownership: You will serve as a technical authority in cross-functional code reviews, acting as an engineering peer who helps teams bake security into their services from the first line of code to the final pull request.
  • Proactive System Hardening: You will stay ahead of the evolving threat landscape by treating security as a continuous engineering challenge-proactively identifying vulnerabilities and architecting technical solutions to fortify our global ecosystem.

Professional Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to architect secure, distributed systems with a focus on programmatic IAM and automated, API-driven PKI management.
  • Extensive experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) in Terraform and a deep commitment to writing clean, maintainable, and production-grade code-ideally in Golang.
  • A test-first mentality toward security, with experience building unit and integration tests into CI/CD pipelines to ensure that security guardrails are as reliable as the features they protect.
  • A strong conceptual grasp of cryptographic primitives and hands-on experience securing containerized workloads and service meshes within ECS and Kubernetes.
  • A track record of taking end-to-end ownership of complex technical projects, from initial design docs and RFCs through to deployment and observability.
  • A belief that if it isn’t tested, it’s broken, and a drive to proactively identify and fix vulnerabilities by treating security as a continuous engineering challenge.

Our Team Philosophy

The Security Engineering team is a diverse and dynamic group passionate about building secure and resilient systems. We’re enthusiastic about security, but we’re not about rigid, one-size-fits-all controls. We believe in striking a balance between protecting our systems and empowering our developers to build and innovate. Our goal is to make security a seamless part of the development lifecycle, not a roadblock. If you are someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and is excited about finding innovative security solutions, we would love to hear from you.

Senior Cloud Security Engineer (Automation & Tooling) - Engine by Starling

Description

About Engineering at Engine by Starling

At Engine by Starling, we don’t do “checkbox security”-we build security software. We treat security as a first-class engineering discipline, where the solution to a threat isn’t a policy, but a robust, concurrent system written in Go.

As a Cloud Security Software Engineer, you will be a hands-on builder responsible for the security architecture of our multi-tenant core banking platform. You’ll spend your days architecting and writing Go-based tooling, automating defenses, and ensuring our infrastructure across AWS and GCP is secure by design and compliant by default.

The Mission

Your mission is to solve complex security problems through software engineering, focusing on three core pillars:

  • Identity & Network Security: Engineering high-performance IAM controls and zero-trust network architectures. You will lead the way in refining edge-defense strategies and trust redirection, ensuring every request is verified and encrypted at scale.
  • Unified Vulnerability Orchestration: Architecting a custom “single pane of glass” for security data. You will build Go-based API integrations and microservices that bridge scanning engines, dependency trackers, and internal portals into a seamless, automated ecosystem.
  • Compliance as Code: Building the automated systems that provide real-time evidence for frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001 & PCI. You’ll ensure we stay compliant through continuous, automated validation rather than manual overhead.

The Team

You will be a key member of our growing Security Engineering team, working at the intersection of Infrastructure, Cross-Cutting, and GRC. We operate like a specialized product team: we identify security friction and build the software to eliminate it. You won’t work in a silo; you’ll collaborate with engineers across the business to deliver a platform that is resilient by default.

About You

We are looking for Software Engineers who are passionate about the Go ecosystem and want to apply those skills to mission-critical security challenges. Whether you come from a Security Engineering background or you are a Backend Engineer with a “security-first” mindset, we value your ability to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code.

What you’ll get to do

  • Engineering Security Tooling: Lead the design and maintenance of our internal security tool suite, written primarily in Go, to automate evidence collection and real-time remediation of security alerts.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Write and peer-review Terraform and custom providers to manage identity and core infrastructure across AWS and GCP.
  • Supply Chain Security: Build automated systems to manage container provenance and integrate security analysis into our CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions/TeamCity).
  • Cloud Native Defense: Engineer Kubernetes security solutions leveraging Cilium, eBPF, and custom controllers to protect our microservices.
  • Cryptographic Engineering (PKI): Build and maintain our Go-based Certificate Authority (CA) tooling and internal PKI infrastructure.
  • Incident Response: Support the team in automated incident response, building the tools that help us investigate and mitigate threats faster.

Requirements

What skills are essential:

  • Go Specialist: You are proficient in Go. You understand its concurrency models, testing patterns, and how to build idiomatic, performant services.
  • The Builder Mindset: You find manual work a personal affront. If a task needs to be done twice, you’ve already started planning the automation for it.
  • Cloud Native: Practical experience with AWS or GCP, ideally managed through Terraform.
  • Container Expertise: You understand Kubernetes internals-from the runtime security to the service mesh.
  • Identity & Networking: Strong understanding of cloud identity models and network protocols.

What skills are desirable:

  • Experience with Cilium or eBPF-based security monitoring.
  • Knowledge of Sigstore/Cosign, image provenance, and SBOMs.
  • Familiarity with hardware security modules (HSMs) or advanced cryptography.
  • Cloud-native security certifications (AWS/GCP).

Benefits

  • 33 days holiday (including public holidays, which you can take when it works best for you)
  • An extra day’s holiday for your birthday
  • Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme
  • Life insurance at 4x your salary & group income protection
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton
  • Generous family-friendly policies
  • Incentives refer a friend scheme
  • Perkbox membership giving access to retail discounts, a wellness platform for physical and mental health, and weekly free and boosted perks
  • Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work, Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships and Electric Vehicle (EV) leasing

Our purpose is underpinned by five Starling values: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness.

Hybrid Working

We have a Hybrid approach to working here at Starling - our preference is that you’re located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we’re able to interact and collaborate in person. In Technology, we’re asking that you attend the office a minimum of 1 day per week.

Our Data Environment

Our Data teams are aligned to divisions covering the following Banking Services & Products, Customer Identity & Financial Crime and Data & ML Engineering. Our Data teams are excited about delivering meaningful and impactful insights to both the business and more importantly our customers. Hear from the team in our latest blogs or our case studies with Women in Tech .

We are looking for talented data professionals at all levels to join the team. We value people being engaged and caring about customers, caring about the code they write and the contribution they make to Starling. People with a broad ability to apply themselves to a multitude of problems and challenges, who can work across teams do great things here at Starling, to continue changing banking for good.

What you’ll be doing

  • Modernize and Scale the RDS Fleet: Ensure the rock-solid reliability of our existing RDS footprint. You will architect automated strategies for seamless, multi-version upgrades and proactive performance tuning to minimize downtime across hundreds of instances
  • Architect Cross-Cloud Portability: Use CNPG and cloud-native patterns to ensure our database layer remains provider-agnostic, allowing seamless deployment across AWS and GCP
  • Evolve Observability & Monitoring: Build deep, proactive monitoring and alerting for our global database fleet. You will ensure we have the visibility to detect performance regressions and health issues before they impact our customers
  • Support Replication & Mobility: Support data streaming and “Zero-Downtime” migration strategies, ensuring data consistency and availability
  • Fortify Business Continuity (BCP): Design and implement rigorous Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Recovery strategies. You will build the automation that ensures data durability and rapid recovery across regions, guaranteeing that database remains resilient in the face of any failures

Requirements

  • PostgreSQL & Kubernetes Expert: You have an extensive experience working with Postgres and a passion for running stateful workloads natively on Kubernetes. You are excited to leverage CNPG to manage persistence, high availability, and automated failover
  • Systems Thinker: You have a natural “reluctance for manual implementation.” You believe infrastructure should be managed entirely via code, using Terraform to provision the foundation and custom APIs to handle the orchestration
  • Distributed Systems Enthusiast: You are excited by the challenge of “multi-everything”-multi-tenant, multi-region, and multi-cloud-while ensuring rigorous data integrity and mobility
  • A Security & Observability Mindset: You believe security is paramount. You focus on building deep observability (Prometheus/Grafana/OpenTelemetry/Humio) and automated guardrails so the fleet is secure by design without requiring manual intervention
  • Engineering via Code: While you are a systems expert, your primary delivery mechanism is code. You leverage Java to build the robust, testable backend services that orchestrate our data layer, taking pride in clean relational modeling and performant DDL

Interview process

Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you! Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious. In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team:

  • Stage 1 - 30 mins with one of the team
  • Stage 2 - Take-home challenge

Our Culture

Our mission is simple - make heroes happy. Our members are the real-life heroes who keep us all safe, cared for, and thriving. It’s what gets us up in the morning and pushes us to go further, think bigger, and create something that truly matters. By focusing on their happiness, we create amazing experiences, deliver unrivalled discounts, innovative products, and world-class service.

We don’t just follow the usual path - we look for smarter, bolder ways to deliver real impact. We take ownership, move fast, and work shoulder to shoulder to build something special.

We promote hybrid working, and value in-person collaboration so encourage time in our offices, where you can make the most of our fully stocked snack drawers - either the HQ in Leicestershire, or London, Holborn office. The frequency and office location will vary depending on the role and team. We aim to be flexible, but we aren’t able to offer fully remote working.

Blue Light Card is an equal opportunities employer. We believe that employing a diverse workforce is key to our success. We make recruiting decisions based on your experience and skills. In the event of a high number of applications, we’ll prioritise candidates who meet both the essential and desirable criteria for the role.
