Summary:

This role involves designing and overseeing the implementation of protection schemes, control systems, and related equipment to ensure the safe and reliable operation of power networks, substations, and Transmissions and Distribution electrical infrastructure.

Position requires technical expertise and vast experience working in Transmission and Distribution sector for protection & control and Substation Automation system/SCADA design (from 11kV up to 400kV). Candidate should lead the design and specification of protection and control systems for electrical substations, powerplants, and transmission/distribution networks.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Candidate is responsible to develop protection settings, relay PSL files, coordination studies, including fault detection and isolation strategies.
  • Candidates should have complete knowledge of all TSO/DNO standards & specifications with respect to P&C Design & Calculations, as well as overall Substation Design Works. He/She should ensure compliance with relevant national and international standards (e.g., IEC, BS, IEEE) in protection system design.
  • Candidate should have good knowledge of substation primary design and substation equipment/switchgear specifications. He/She should ensure that the design meets safety standards and regulatory requirements, incorporating protection against electrical hazards, arc flash, and other safety concerns.
  • Design, implement and maintain SCADA/communication systems for a variety of clients in sectors including utilities, oil and gas, manufacturing, industrial automation and various other communication networks.
  • Configure and optimize network infrastructure & communication protocols such as IEC 61850; Distributed Network Protocol (DNP 3); Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP); Precision Time Protocol (PTP); Network Time Protocol (NTP); Simplified Network Time Protocol (NTP), Modbus, OPC, Profibus, etc for seamless integration with field devices, including RTUs, PLCs, IEDs, etc, also ensure stable connectivity between SCADA centres & remote sites, and configure secure VPNs & remote access protocols to allow for safe, off-site monitoring and control.
  • Understand client requirements & produce network architecture philosophy diagram, IED telecommunication diagram, SCADA & Telecommunications Panel design, Network IP allocation, I/O Schedules, Cable & Core schedules, etc.
  • Assist with the setup and commissioning of SCADA systems at client sites, troubleshoot field devices and network communication issues, perform preventive and corrective maintenance on SCADA infrastructure and associated hardware.
  • Efficiently design/develop the SCADA/communication systems (e.g., Ignition, Siemens WinCC, GE iFIX, etc) to ensure real-time data acquisition and control for critical infrastructure.
  • Provide remote support for troubleshooting SCADA system and network issues, ensuring minimal downtime and swift resolution of critical incidents.
  • Conduct system upgrades, testing, and validation for new features, components, and patches.
  • Implement cybersecurity measures to safeguard SCADA systems against emerging threats.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth integration and deployment of SCADA systems.

What we’re looking for:

VVB are looking for a Principal Electrical Engineer, to be nominated and carry out the Network Rail Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM) role on the Old Oak Common project, covering the full Anthro scope of Mechanical, Electrical, Public Health, Fire detection/suppression and Communications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be nominated and carry out the NR 02009 duties of the Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM) for the whole of the Old Oak Common MEPHFC scope.
    • Assessing and Mentoring CRE’s in all aspects of applicable Network Rail standards including Engineering Management for Projects NR/L2/INI/02009.
    • Using initiative and confidence to put forward solutions based on sound engineering principles.

This is a site-based role, working within landlord areas of a modern multi-storey building, offering autonomy as the primary engineer on site, supported by a supervisor.

The Role:

Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive works.
Maintaining building services systems including HVAC, pumps and associated plant.
Supporting water systems maintenance including basic Legionella compliance and cooling towers.
Fault finding and diagnosing issues across mechanical and electrical systems.
Managing subcontractors, including reviewing RAMS and issuing permits to work.
Completing administrative duties including reports, compliance paperwork and client communication.
Ensuring all works are carried out in line with health & safety and site procedures.

Package:

£45,000 basic salary

Requirements:

Electrical or Mechanical qualification (City & Guilds, NVQ or equivalent).

Typically, this person will work in close collaboration with the Engineering Team to deliver safe, efficient vessels to our operations team. Log and report faults, works and repairs in the companys compliance system.
Carry out safety checks on electrical systems in line with statutory legislation and company policy.
Prioritise and conduct planned and unplanned maintenance, ensuring vessels remain operational.
Provide additional support when required for urgent engineering needs.
Collaborate with the senior engineering team to define, implement and review technical improvements.
Provide technical analysis and reporting as required by the Head of Engineering and Vessel Appearance.
Undertake other relevant duties or reasonable requests as required by senior management.

Qualifications and requirements for the Electrical Engineer:

Qualified electrician or electrical engineer.
Compliant with British Standards of Wiring Regulations (or equivalent).
Experience with 12V, 24V and 415V 3-Phase systems.
Knowledge of engine-driven power generation systems.
HVAC experience.
Strong communication, organisational and planning skills.
Analytical, collaborative and detail-oriented mindset.
Leadership ability with a proactive and team-focused approach.
