What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop and manage requirements and acceptance criteria specific to a system or product and/or across a system of systems, platform or programme
  • Understand the contractual and performance requirements for various systems, and support the definition and associated acceptance criteria and events through design, build, integration, installation and commissioning activities
  • Produce documentation required to support the design review process, including: diagrams; technical specifications; supporting calculations; design evidence and justifications
  • Review relevant supplier documentation, technical manuals, electrical schematics, general arrangements, Interface specification and ensure it is captured and recorded appropriately
  • Ensure design proving evidence is comprehensive, captured within the requirements management tools and has been endorsed by the appropriate level of authority
  • Ensure compliance against contractual requirements and that work is undertaken in accordance with company, safety, environmental, contractual and local business processes, standards, procedures and documentation
  • Undertake design reviews and presentations to customers
  • Provide technical support to integrated performance and acceptance activities, including acceptance of equipment from suppliers through to system acceptance by the customer
  • Provide support to the Certificate of Design activities appropriate to the discipline and articulate and present complex technical argument clearly, logically and simply
  • Deliver technical input and engineering solutions in support of build activities, defect resolution and change management

Your skills and experiences:

  • BEng (Hons) / MEng or equivalent
  • Working towards professional registration
  • Technical report writing skills
  • Demonstrable experience of engineering lifecycle
  • Knowledge and experience in defence standards whilst not essential would be an advantage
  • System calculations, modelling and analysis
  • Understanding of at least one of the following areas:
    • Instrumentation and control system theory including PID control,
    • Electrical circuits design, EMC precautions and power supply characteristics
    • Safety Integrity Levels and BS EN 61508 or 61511
    • Control panel detail design
    • Fieldbus technology (Profibus/Profinet)

The Centralised Control and Instrumentation Team:

The Senior Engineer shall provide support to the Principal Engineers and/or external specialists during development, analysis, integration and verification of platform control and instrumentation systems. In this role you will be involved in leading analysis and the production of technical reports and team deliverables, such as managing and maturing operator control console design to meet defined design criteria and programme demands. This role will be working on the SSNA program and the next generation submarine design.

JOB SPECIFICATION: Electrical Engineer, Electronic Service Engineer : Instrumentation, PLC Control and Automation Systems - Marine Industry

This is a field based Electronic / Electrical Service Engineer vacancy for a very well established and respected specialist in instrumentation, PLC control and automation systems to the marine industry.

This role will be split between (80%) scheduled electrical / electronic installation, commissioning and refit projects - typically staying away for 10-14 days at sites across the UK - but with a heavy focus on customers around Falmouth / Devonport.

The remainder (20%) will be reactionary fault finding and repair (1-2 day trips) on first and third party instrumentation, PLC controls and automation equipment or machinery.

The majority of work will be in the UK, though you will work on international projects - perhaps 6 weeks per year and including trips to Gibraltar, UAE, Bahrain and USA.

Job Description:

We are looking for a genuinely multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer to join our clients team in Low Moor, Bradford. This is a diverse, hands-on role in a fast-paced manufacturing environment where you’ll be expected to work across both mechanical and electrical systems.

You’ll be responsible for carrying out a wide range of planned and reactive maintenance tasks, supporting continuous production, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all plant equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

Mechanical & Electrical Maintenance:

Maintain and repair mechanical systems: belts, chains, bearings, pipework, pumps, valves, and filters.
Work on pneumatic and hydraulic systems including solenoids, actuators, rams, and compressors.
Fault-find and repair basic electrical issues, including sensors, switches, fuses, relays, and overloads.
Carry out safe isolation of electrical equipment and support minor electrical installations or modifications.
Understand and work with steam systems, boilers, control valves, and water softening equipment.
Diagnose and resolve faults in automated and computer-controlled machinery.
Support continuous improvement and preventative maintenance initiatives.
Essential Skills & Experience:

Demonstrable experience in a similar multi-skilled maintenance role within manufacturing or industrial environments.
Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding abilities.
17th / 18th Edition qualified
Confident working safely with 3-phase systems, basic control panels, and low-voltage equipment.
Skilled in using diagnostic tools and interpreting technical documentation.
Comfortable working across a wide range of systems from pneumatics and hydraulics to electrical controls.
Desirable Skills & Experience:

Familiarity with PLC-controlled equipment (understanding inputs/outputs, basic diagnostics).
Experience with steam and compressed air systems.
Experience with continuous improvement or lean manufacturing practices.

The Recipe

Youll be working in collaboration with our existing Software and Controls Engineers to maintain all software, hardware infrastructure and control systems. Youll also identify and complete continuous improvement projects to increase plant efficiency, reduce downtime and save energy and associated costs.

Your work will focus on improving plant performance and efficiency, supporting in breakdown resolution followed by leading the investigation into route cause analysis (RCA) to prevent future occurrences. Youll enjoy the variety of a manufacturing environment and be keen to get involved in other work such as safety teams and improvement initiatives.

Youll be encouraged and supported to foster new ideas and perspectives whilst driving change. We promote a culture of continuous improvement whilst working on a changing approach to reliability centred maintenance in a highly automated production facility.

The Role

  • Requirement to ensure knowledge of latest technologies and practices are continually updated with opportunities identified to optimise manufacturing processes
  • Safety - Adherence to relevant safety standard across all activities (including external contractors). Ensure plant controls are safe to operate, maintain and personnel conform to health & safety legislation, policies and standards.
  • Through effective software and hardware management processes, supports and manages site implementation of a Business led engineering reliability strategy.
  • Support the development of site revenue and capital budgets, whilst identifying and leading the execution of relevant capital projects.
  • Drive a proactive Engineering Continuous Improvement culture cross-functionally. Through contributing to the improvement and development of manufacturing hardware & software activities
  • Training and coaching of Engineers to an agreed working knowledge in PLC / control systems to ensure they have the required competency and capability to support bakery performance
  • Ensure supplier contract content & supplier relationship is maintained, and supplier effectiveness is reviewed.

Essential Ingredients

  • Youll have a strong drive to identify opportunities for equipment improvement using plant-based automation and related solutions to help improve efficiency and performance.
  • Experience in fault finding and maintaining existing control systems, preferably with Allen Bradley (Rockwell) platforms (RSLogix500, Logix5000 etc.)
  • Experience of software development and programming languages including ladder logic
  • Knowledge of communication protocols and networks
  • Strong electrical knowledge and understanding of control related systems
  • Knowledge and experience of project management
  • Knowledge / awareness off functional safety
  • Proven experience of improvements resulting in a reduction of breakdowns or increased efficiency
  • Formal electrical automation training with an awareness of process and mechanical engineering.
