Our client provides science and technology consultancy expertise to help solve the most complex challenges faced by mission-critical defence programmes.
Their defence practice works in partnership with national government bodies, international institutions, and global prime contractors on developing and leveraging next-generation technologies, enterprise transformation, feasibility analysis, system engineering, and programme delivery across S&T, Maritime, Air, Land, Joint, and defence digital projects.

Key Responsibilities re role of Systems Engineer:

As a Systems Engineer you will play a pivotal role in MOD programme across the CADMID cycle and in several domains, providing expert consultation to design, develop, and integrate complex systems and technologies.

We are looking for Systems Engineers with broad expertise in one or more disciplines, including

: System Design and Architecture:

  • Lead the development and refinement of system architectures for defence projects.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system designs meet the unique requirements of the UK MoD.
  • Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE): Utilise MBSE methodologies and tools to create models, simulations, and documentation that aid in requirement analysis, system design, and verification processes.

Requirements Engineering and Management:

  • Identify and consult stakeholders to capture User needs and define requirements, measures of effectiveness, and performance. Capture evidence to support procurement activities.
  • Develop, analyse and manage user and system-level requirements for MOD projects. Ensure clarity, completeness, and consistency with project objectives.
  • Conduct thorough requirements analysis and traceability, ensuring alignment with UK MoD specifications.
  • Develop and manage requirements documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

The Role Systems Engineering Consultant

This will include working with clients to analyse their problems; capture requirements; create architectures; identify potential options; assess solutions using systems analysis methods; and make recommendations based on robust evidence. Projects will typically be in support of research and procurement activities in the defence and security sector but may include work in other sectors and government departments.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering/ leading technical consulting projects.
  • Using systems engineering to tackle real world problems, applying tools and techniques, and developing novel approaches where required.
  • Applying and developing systems engineering methods, tools and techniques, including developing and applying novel approaches where required.
  • Working organically in customer teams to deliver high quality systems engineering advice & artefacts.
  • Building new relationships and maintaining current customer relationships.
  • Assisting/ leading in identifying and winning work for a new and growing consultancy.

About You

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following essential and desirable attributes:

Essential

Educated to degree level, or equivalent relevant experience.

Ability to use and apply both soft and hard systems engineering techniques to support system design/ development, business decision making, policy development, and/or research.

Development, application, and delivery of systems engineering methods, tools and artefacts.

Knowledge and Understanding of the Systems Engineering Lifecycle.

Building and maintaining client and stakeholder relationships.

Authoring technical reports, developing systems engineering artefacts, and presenting to customers.

Experience in one or more of the following systems engineering technical specialisms:

Essential experience

To succeed in this role, you must have experience working as the sole software test engineer on a team.

In your CV and at interview, you’ll need to show experience of:

• Recent hands on experience with Java and Selenium.

• presenting work to stakeholders

• managing defects and tasks through to resolution

• version control tools like git and peer review processes

• participating in E2E and UAT.

You’ll need a good understanding of:

• your working area and applying this to your role

As a Solution Architect, you’ll design strong but adaptable foundations for the people who use them – enabling robust, scalable and sustainable solutions. The role You’ll take end-to-end ownership of solutions for our clients, and align them to business outcomes, technology strategy, commercial/financial constraints, and architecture governance. You’ll create solutions blueprints with views that express business, data, application, and technology, to address stakeholder needs. You’ll effectively communicate the solution through governance boards, stakeholder groups, and delivery teams to bring the solution to life and assure effective delivery. Ensure that work is carried out in accordance with Opencast's quality, environmental, and information security policies and procedures, as well as applicable customer policies, standards, and procedures while working on client. Requirements Due to the nature of this role, applicants must either currently hold active Security Check (SC) Clearance or be eligible to obtain it. Eligibility typically requires UK citizenship and continuous residence in the UK for the past five years, with no single absence exceeding 28 consecutive days. As a result, we are unable to progress applications from candidates who do not meet these requirements. Essential experience We’ll want you to demonstrate experience of solutions architecture. You don’t need to have had the job title of solutions architect before. In your CV and interview, please show how you have: • built strong relationships with senior stakeholders to understand their views. • a strong foundation in software development, design, and delivery roles. • enabled and assured a delivery team’s implementation of your solutions architectures effectively. • worked with development life-cycle methodologies such as Agile software development, Scrum, and DevOps. • a good working knowledge of architecture frameworks and modelling languages. As well as solution architecture skills, there are essential core skills you’ll need to be a great consultant. In the interview, please show how you: • demonstrated the significant, tangible business benefits of the proposals you initiate for clients • take a methodical and considered approach to solving problems • take a collaborative and consultative approach to leading and guiding teams • keep up to date with new and emerging technology trends and their practical application In the interview, we’ll ask you to describe how you approach architecture, deliver business outcomes, and engage stakeholders. If you’re successful in the first interview, we’ll ask you back to present a proposal from a case study and problem statement. Desirable experience Some areas of experience are not essential but relevant to the role: • Experienced with Architecture Frameworks (e.g. TOGAF, Zachman, Open Agile Architecture) If you have this experience, please show it on your CV and we can talk about it in the interview. Salary Senior consultant salary range: £70,000 - £80,000 per annum What we offer A competitive package including a 7% employer pension contribution, share options and a discretionary bonus. Job Specification: Lead Software Engineer Company Overview The employer is a leading developer and manufacturer of haemodynamic monitoring medical devices with a global market presence. The organization is currently undergoing a strategic digital transformation, transitioning from a hardware-centric model to a software-led solutions provider. In tandem with this shift, the company is developing a next-generation product range designed to capture new international market segments. The Role We are seeking a highly competent Lead Software Engineer to report directly to the CTO. This individual will be a strategic thinker capable of influencing cross-functional teams. Beyond expert-level coding, the successful candidate will leverage their technical expertise to drive the commercial growth and profitability of an ambitious international medical technology business. Key Responsibilities - Embedded Development: Develop software for embedded Linux platforms within a medical device environment. - Compliance: Lead the development of safety-critical software and documentation in strict accordance with _IEC 62304_. - System Integrity: Manage investigation of software issues, identify solutions, and lead design/code reviews. - Testing & Release: Create software test plans, execute integration testing, and manage change/release cycles. - Security: Support and implement cybersecurity requirements for medical devices. - Strategic Input: Provide technical insight to guide the development of new features and software-led product strategies. Required Skills & Competencies - Technical Proficiency: Proven track record in software development using _C/C++_. - Platform Experience: Strong experience delivering solutions on embedded Linux operating systems. - Systems Engineering: Expertise in software development lifecycles, including integration and testing. - Leadership: Ability to provide clear technical direction and solve complex problems. - Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to manage internal stakeholders. Desired Skills & Competencies - Regulated Environments: Experience delivering real-time or safety-related software (MedTech, Aerospace, etc.). - Frameworks & Tools: Experience with Qt/QML and _GitLab_. - Languages: Knowledge of Rust is highly advantageous; proficiency in Python or Bash scripting. - Architecture: Knowledge of modeling languages (e.g., _SysML, UML_) and both procedural and object-oriented development. - Linux Customization: Knowledge of Yocto for customizing Linux OS using System-on-Module (SOM) Board Support Packages (BSPs).
