We have a large fleet of vehicles and operational appliances that are used to protect and support the community both operationally at incidents and whilst undertaking prevention activities.

The Transport and Engineering Workshops team undertake all servicing and maintenance to ensure all vehicles comply with legislation and Service best practice. This is integral to ensure all our appliances remain ready for operational deployment when needed.

Key Responsibilities:

• To carry out servicing, repair and maintenance of vehicles, appliances, plant and equipment, in accordance with the vehicle servicing schedule to ensure the availability of Service assets.
• To carry out the installation, maintenance and diagnosis of vehicle electrics covering areas such as communications, alarm, charging, electromagnetic retarding, auto gearbox, ABS, LDW and ESP Systems and have knowledge of CAN systems to ensure Service assets always remain operational and available.
• To provide standby/On-Call out of hours cover on a rota basis as the ‘on call’ Duty Technician to carry out essential repairs on vehicles or plant to ensure operational appliances are always available
• To ensure that job cards, booking forms and other records are completed and that all spare parts used are properly recorded to ensure assets are correctly accounted for.
• To notify the Workshop Manager of deficiencies, faults or damage to vehicles, or any items found which require replacement to ensure work plans can be altered according to Service priorities.
• To carry out minor body and paintwork repairs to vehicles and appliances to maintain value for money and minimise the time operational appliances are unavailable.
• To assist in the movement of fire appliances and ancillary vehicles to any Service or other premises as required, maintaining operational availability.

About you

You will have:

• City and Guilds Motor Vehicle Technician Part II, or equivalent qualification.
• Undertaken a recognised apprenticeship or period of training in motor vehicle engineering.
• Full manual driving licence for category B (car) with no pending issues.
• Significant experience in commercial vehicle maintenance with a sound understanding of the issues involved in maintaining and repairing light goods vehicles.
• In-depth knowledge and experience in the installation, maintenance and diagnosis of vehicle electrics covering areas such as communications, alarm, charging, electromagnetic retarding, automatic gearboxes, ABS, LDW and ESP and CAN Systems.
• Excellent organisational and co-ordination skills, self-motivated and a team player, able to prioritise and work unsupervised to an appropriate standard within deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills oral and written.
• Ability to use Microsoft Windows based software packages to record work activities, training records and undertake communications.
• An understanding of and commitment to Health and Safety in the workplace.
