Purpose of the Role
We are looking for a proactive and experienced Laravel / Backend Developer to join our growing team in Altrincham, Manchester. You will be responsible for delivering well-structured, secure, and maintainable backend features that power web and mobile applications. Youβre expected to work with a high level of autonomy on scoped tasks owning features from planning through to deployment while actively collaborating with other developers, designers, and delivery managers.
Your Core Responsibilities
Develop and maintain backend features, API endpoints, and third-party integrations
Design database schemas, write efficient queries, and ensure scalable data access
Improve API performance, error handling, logging, and security practices
Write clear, reusable, and testable code (unit and integration where appropriate)
Collaborate with frontend developers to align on API contracts and data flow
Support feature and project scoping analysis for Marketing and Management
Participate in code reviews giving constructive feedback and learning from peers
Work with PMs and delivery managers to scope, estimate, and plan backend tasks
Skills & Experience Expected at This Level
2β4 years of backend development experience using Laravel (PHP)
Confident working with RESTful APIs
Strong knowledge of relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
Familiar with authentication, role-based access control, and basic encryption
Comfortable writing modular code using controllers/services and understanding system boundaries
Proficient in Git-based workflows, including PRs, branching, and conflict resolution
Bonus: experience with Redis, Docker, queues/jobs, or microservice architecture
Requirements:
Strong proficiency in Laravel and PHP
Experience with databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and RESTful APIs
Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git)
A proactive approach to problem-solving and excellent attention to detail
Strong communication and teamwork skill
