This is a hands-on engineering role with real leadership impact. You’ll guide and develop a team of 5 engineers, drive technical direction across multiple applications and lead the modernisation of some of the most significant legacy services in government.

Based in the heart of Leamington Spa, Pixel Toys have spent over a decade pushing the capabilities of mobile and VR gaming. We have developed multiple award-winning titles, including: Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade, Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realm War; and were now excited to be exclusively working on a new game, unlike ANYTHING weve done previously!
As a forward thinking and innovative studio we are always looking for new technologies and techniques to develop and use in our games and make them even more engaging experiences for our customers.
We are excited to continue to grow our team and are always on the lookout for highly talented and motivated individuals, who are passionate about gaming and excited to join us on our ambitious journey!
The Role:
Join Pixel Toys as a Principal/Senior Web Engineer on a 6month contract and steer technical direction while setting the gold standard for our web engineering discipline.
In this role you will move beyond day-to-day coding in order to architect the safety, scalability, and longevity of our entire ecosystem, ensuring every system is resilient enough to thrive long-term. By planning and executing a sophisticated cloud infrastructure strategy using Infrastructure as Code frameworks (such as Pulumi and SST), you will provide the rock-solid foundation upon which our digital experiences are built.
Your influence will be felt across the entire business as you help set the technical roadmap, leveraging your expertise to tackle complex problems before they ever impact the user experience. About you:
Joining us as a seasoned technical visionary with a deep professional understanding of web development, you will be able to demonstrate a history of architecting and delivering complex, scalable systems. Your expertise spans the entire stack, allowing you to move fluently between high-performance frontend frameworks like React and Astro in SSR mode and robust backend environments powered by AWS Elasticache, DynamoDB, and OAuth integrations.
You will bring a sophisticated understanding of architectural patterns, utilising Dependency Injection and IoC containers such as Inversify to build modular, maintainable code, while leveraging a CMS to empower content delivery. Infrastructure is a core part of your toolkit, and you are as comfortable managing cloud environments via IAC (Infrastructure as Code) frameworks, as you are implementing rigorous observability standards through tools like BugSnag and Datadog.
You also possess a strong background in integration testing frameworks, ensuring that every deployment is as stable as it is innovative. As an expert in Agile development, you don’t just follow a roadmap, but help to define it, using your experience to balance immediate feature delivery with long-term system health and technical excellence.
Beyond your technical mastery, you are an exceptional communicator with a keen eye for the fine details that separate good code from world-class engineering. As a self-starter who thrives on independence, you are more than capable of juggling multiple high-impact projects simultaneously without ever losing sight of quality.
On top of all of this, your passion for the craft is matched by your commitment to professional growth, making you a natural mentor and a stabilising force for the wider engineering team.
