Role Overview

Competent in operating CNC machine tools, you will be able to read engineering drawings using the latest GD&T, and have a flexible and proactive work ethic along with the ability to work reliably under pressure to meet deadlines.

Were looking for a Senior Engineer - Materials & Processes with a strong non-metallic materials engineering background, to join our materials and test team to support the production and development of next generation composite aero structures, ice protection and transparency products. The role will be based in the Materials, Coatings and Test (MCT) team within the wider Engineering and Technology department and report to the Functional Team Leader.

The role as a Senior Engineer - Materials & Processes will support the business and engineering team, with non polymer materials science and processing knowledge and guidance. The role will provide a deep understanding of the interactions between processing parameters and material properties of Acrylics, Polycarbonates and adhesives, being able to guide new technology test plans and current production deviations.

There will be occasional travel, national and international, required to support customer visits and other GKN sites. You will also support the work of the business to establish safe working practices and necessary level of documentation. You will be involved with projects from the planning / assembly / instrumentation / commissioning phase though to successfully performing and reporting the test. You will also be responsible for providing specialist support to existing programmes within your field of expertise, helping to resolve manufacturing issues and supporting continuous improvement efforts.

You will have a proven track record of leading and delivering technical work, with strong communication skills being confident working with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including non-technical audiences.

Based at our Luton Manufacturing site as the Manufacturing Engineering Manager Tooling youll be working across both our Defence and Civil business lines. You will provide and lead a team of Tooling and Cad Engineers in the design, manufacture and maintenance and control of all Site Tools.

This will involve the technical capability to create and design tools as solutions to support the manufacturing operations. Youll be accountable for delivering robust, capable manufacturing process technology as it applies to materials, tooling, part fabrication and assembly. The role involves the creation of significant tooling designs from initial concept through to production for the production of aircraft transparencies and Ice Protection Tooling, jigs and fixtures.

Among other activities, this will include responsibilities for 4 large CNC machines on site and calibration of current and the development of new or existing tooling. Supporting Manufacturing Engineering teams may also be required. The successful candidate will be experienced in a relevant engineering discipline and have a hands on approach, be able to prioritise jobs, be comfortable liaising with suppliers and other departments.

Furthermore responsibilities for Manufacturing Engineering Configuration control, using SAP and more traditional documentation such as Specifications and Routings.

The role will also provide leadership, coaching and mentoring to a small team of Tooling Engineers on the Luton site, supporting the Manufacturing Engineering Managers in matters of staff performance and development. What you’ll be doing

You’ll lead the Branch’s contribution to delivering Nuclear Services task orders, ensuring strategic objectives are clearly defined and aligned with Nuclear Services, EPRE, and licensee goals. The Branch comprises multiple disciplines, including Radiological Consequences, Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA), Severe Accidents, Dosimetry, Shielding, Internal and External Hazards. The teams within work across the full breadth of the nuclear lifecycle. Priorities will be communicated effectively to ensure clarity and focus across the team. A key part of your role will involve influencing and negotiating with senior internal and external stakeholders to support successful outcomes.

You’ll develop and manage relationships with regulatory bodies such as the ONR, building trust and maintaining open, professional dialogue. Alongside this, you’ll oversee the Branch’s budget and cost control, ensuring accurate reporting and efficient use of resources. You’ll also be responsible for creating and delivering short, medium, and long-term (rolling 5-year) business plans to guide the Branch’s development.

Who you are

Eligibility

We welcome applications from

  • Substantive Area Commanders serving with a UK Fire Authority fire and rescue service, holding valid ICL3/ICL4 (application on transfer)
  • Substantive and fully competent Group Managers with a minimum of 12 months experience in role, serving with a UK Fire Authority fire and rescue service (application on promotion)
  • Personnel that have passed the BFRS Group Manager promotion gateway and hold a place in the GM talent pool or serving in a GM role (internal applicants only) (application on promotion)

Internal applicants must be deemed ready for progression at appraisal.

Applicants on promotion must be assessed as competent to operate as an ICL3 Advanced Incident Commander, with proven relevant experience managing operational incidents at this level.  They must be able to demonstrate experience of operating effectively at strategic level,and have a track record of achievement.

Internal applicants meeting the eligibility criteria to apply, that do not currently meet the full criteria for the AC role, may still be shortlisted and be eligible to join a development pool if successful at gateway.
