HV Plant Engineer – Substation Projects (Tier 1 Contractor)

We’re recruiting an experienced HV Plant Engineer to support a Tier 1 contractor on major substation and transmission projects (33kV–400kV). The role covers engineering support, installation oversight, testing and commissioning of primary plant equipment on live HV networks.

Role Overview

You will provide technical and site-based support across the installation and commissioning of HV primary plant. The work includes reviewing designs, supervising installation quality, coordinating testing activities and ensuring safe, compliant delivery to National Grid/DNO standards.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical Support

  • Support installation and commissioning of transformers, switchgear, breakers, disconnectors, CTs/VTs, busbars, reactors and capacitor banks.
  • Review SLDs, wiring diagrams, protection schematics and layout drawings.
  • Ensure compliance with National Grid TP documents, DNO standards and BS/IEC requirements.
  • Assist with planning outages, isolations and energisation activities.

Installation Oversight

  • Supervise construction teams installing HV equipment, earthing, structures and cabling.
  • Oversee cable terminations, joints and bonding (XLPE, PILC, oil-filled where applicable).
  • Carry out inspections, quality checks and snagging before energisation.

Testing & Commissioning

  • Support or carry out: primary/secondary injection, insulation & winding resistance tests, contact resistance, GIS/GIB pressure tests, CT/VT ratio & polarity checks and functional protection testing.
  • Liaise with protection, commissioning, OEM and SCADA teams.
  • Record defects, NCRs and commissioning results accurately.

Safety & Compliance

  • Work under Electrical Safety Rules, National Grid Safety Rules and full PTW/LOTO processes.
  • Review RAMS, lift plans and environmental procedures.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, technical briefings and ensure safe working practices.

Documentation & Handover

  • Review/approve ITPs, FAT/SAT documents, O&M manuals and data sheets.
  • Complete commissioning sheets, plant records, defect logs, as-built updates and handover packs.
  • Ensure all documentation is correctly submitted through document control.

Coordination & Interfaces

  • Work closely with design teams, Tier 1 contractors, National Grid/DNO engineers and OEMs.
  • Attend progress, construction and commissioning meetings.
  • Provide technical clarification and support equipment warranty discussions.
What You’ll Need
  • Strong background in HV primary plant on substations (33kV–400kV).
  • Experience with transformers, switchgear, CT/VTs, busbars, GIS/AIS and associated HV equipment.
  • Good understanding of HV testing and commissioning practices.
  • Knowledge of National Grid/DNO standards and HV safety rules.
  • Ability to interpret drawings and manage installation quality.
