Responsibilities and duties of the Generator Service Engineer role
Reporting to the Service Manager you will:

Electrical and mechanical fault finding

Radar Systems Engineer - Primary Surveillance Radar

JOB PURPOSE:

To be responsible for supporting engineering aspects of the procurement, safety management, and bringing into service of relevant ATC Systems. Typically, these will be minor / less complex systems and projects, focusing on simpler systems or specific equipment. May be required to undertake Engineering Authority roles in supporting relevant ATC Systems through the entire equipment life cycle.

This System Engineer position will be working in our Primary Surveillance Radar (PSR) and Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) team, so knowledge of these systems is desirable.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Project Delivery

Negotiate and coordinate project requirements and timelines with stakeholders.
Produce technical specifications for minor systems and support major system specifications.
Support production of engineering estimates for project bids.
Advise and assist with tender evaluations and assess technical solutions.
Contribute to project planning in line with delivery milestones.
Act as Change Lead for minor projects, ensuring change assurance activities are completed.
Manage day-to-day project activities including installation and commissioning.
Perform acceptance testing and produce test reports.
Produce and review maintenance and operating procedures.
Ensure engineering deliverables are met according to the project plan.

Undertake the Engineering Authority (EA) role for designated systems.

Prepare and maintain support documentation for allocated equipment and systems.
Respond to customer technical enquiries and manage Corrective Action Requests.
Monitor operational systems and conduct investigations into issues and faults.
Plan and implement modifications to correct issues and faults with minimal disruption.
Maintain awareness of industry developments affecting airport systems.

Team leadership and resource management

Manage direct reports within the section.
Allocate team resources to projects and activities.
Ensure team competency and identify training needs.
Review performance of direct reports periodically.
Identify and support development needs of team members.

AUTONOMY:

As directed by their line manager, commits resources within their direct control to achieve project deliverables within agreed financial limits.
Assists in identifying the strategic aims of assigned projects and works tactically to deliver agreed customer solutions.
As Engineering Authority will pro-actively recommend activities and resources required to address asset support issues.
Responsible for up to 3 direct reports. Plays a co-ordinating role for subcontractors.

SCOPE OF JOB:

The post holder is required to contribute to delivery of multiple projects at any one time involving different project teams and locations. They may also be required to fulfil an EA role. The post holder is expected to resolve conflicting demands on their time and their direct reports, in consultation with their line management.
There is little requirement for strategic planning in this post. However, the post holder is likely to play a role in advising managers on issues which may affect strategy.
The post holder may be called on to advise and assist operational engineers to restore equipment into service. In support of this the post holder may be asked to attend airport sites at short notice.
Where required, and where agreed, the post holder will deliver structured training and / or carry out structured Competency Assessment Checks within their field of expertise and in accordance with NATS procedures.
The post holder will be required to undertake tasks within an operational environment therefore will need to demonstrate suitable behaviours.
The post holder may be required to provide out of hours on-call support for specific systems as designated by the Head of section.

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

Professional engineering qualification to Higher National Certificate (Level 4 or SQF Level 7) as a minimum Electronics, Telecommunications or Computer Science or other relevant Engineering qualification discipline.

In lieu of the above qualifications the candidate will be required to demonstrate one of the following alternative criteria:

Relevant lower-level engineering qualifications such as an Apprenticeship coupled with demonstrable engineering experience in a relevant field (May include but not limited to: RAF, Navy, Rail, other Safety Critical environment).Evidence of substantial experience gained in a relevant transferable environment (such as ATSEP) gained over a significant period.

Experience of supporting systems and equipment similar to those used by ANSP’s such as RAF, Navy, Rail, other Safety Critical environment and experience in maintenance engineering on this type of equipment.
Shall demonstrate an understanding of safety critical systems and the impact they may have within our operational environment.

It is desirable for the post holder to have -

A good understanding and experience of relevant Air Traffic Management (ATM) legislation, standards and procedures.
Completed Air Traffic equipment training such as ATSEP and OEM training courses.
A good understanding of Air Traffic Control practices and procedures.
A wide knowledge of the equipment and techniques used in providing all aspects of ATM at airports.
A passion for Safety and Air Traffic Management.

Technical Expertise in Surveillance Systems (Desirable) -

Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of Primary Surveillance Radar (PSR) and Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) sensors.
Hands-on experience in sensor operation, including installation, data integration, and networking, and subsequent fault finding.
Demonstrated experience in radar modelling, simulation, and confirming real-world performance through rigorous testing (including dedicated flight trials and Target of Opportunity analysis)
Strong grounding in RF engineering, including Radar antenna, transmitter and receiver characteristics.

Description

The successful candidate will have a full understanding of the principles of systems engineering, will have prior experience as a Systems Engineer on a major programme involving accepting and integrating deliveries from suppliers. Using their experience in Systems Engineering, the successful candidate will be responsible for working with customers and suppliers to execute Systems Engineering activities across the full lifecycle, with specific focus on Model Based Systems Engineering.

Specific duties may include:

Technical and/or team leading of significant portion of engineering activity of assigned programme.

Defining and leading the engineering life cycle and ensure that all Engineering tasks in the defined scope of work are delivered appropriately

Working with operational stakeholders, technology suppliers and architects to define system of system level requirements
Allocation of requirements to lower level services, conducting technical derivation analysis as required
Modelling of functional requirements and scenarios inside of MBSE and architectural framework approaches
Capturing of non-functional requirements within DOORS
Managing compliance assessments at systems of systems, system and lower level systems & services levels
Overseeing development of lower level designs corresponding to owned areas of the system
Producing detailed engineering artefacts such as:
Detailed Designs
Service Management Designs
Designs for onboarding service applications onto virtualized infrastructures
Compliance Reports
Security, HF and Safety artefacts
Capacity and Throughput analysis
Delivering milestone technical reviews and the associated work product deliverables
Defining architectural solutions comprising multiple underpinning COTS and bespoke designs and driving the competitive selection of these technologies
Creation of on-boarding designs
Definition of user interfaces
Modelling operational, business and system behaviours within architectural views
Conducting cost/benefit/technical trade studies

Required Skills:

Strong experience with architecture modelling tools (e.g. Sparx Enterprise Architect, MagicDraw Cameo)
Strong experience with Architecture Modelling Frameworks and Languages (e.g. TOGAF, MODAF, NAF, SysML, Archimate)
Success in working within large-scale, mission critical and complex integration programmes
Ability to work with a number of stakeholders and suppliers, working across organizational boundaries as appropriate
Experience of developing system behavioural diagrams, modelling interfaces and developing models to encapsulate functional requirements
Demonstrable successes within the System Engineering environment
Excellent customer facing skills, including being able to ingest large volumes of requirements and information developing clear understanding of customer hot-buttons and needs
Demonstrable knowledge and cognisance of adjacent disciplines, including programme management, customer relationship management, supplier management and service management
In-depth experience of conducting detailed systems engineering trade solutions to assess options & feasibility, and define optimal solutions

About the Role

Leidos is seeking an experienced Technical Lead (Systems Engineering) to play a pivotal role on a critical national infrastructure Programme, one of Leidos UK’s flagship delivery programmes supporting a high‑profile government customer.

The Technical Lead will provide hands‑on technical leadership across complex, multi‑supplier systems, applying systems engineering best practice to the design, integration, change and assurance of mission‑critical IT services. Working closely with the Chief Engineer, Architects, Project Managers, Infrastructure, Networks and Software teams, the role ensures that solutions delivered by Leidos are technically sound, secure, and fit‑for‑purpose.

What will I be doing?

Technical Leadership

Act as Technical Lead for systems engineering activities within assigned workstreams or projects.
Provide authoritative technical direction across on‑premise and cloud‑hosted systems, ensuring coherence across infrastructure, networks, applications and services.
Lead technical decision‑making, trade‑offs, and design assurance in line with programme and customer requirements.

Systems Engineering & Design

Apply Systems Engineering principles across the full engineering lifecycle (V‑Model), including requirements, design, integration, verification and transition to service.
Own and assure key engineering artefacts, including impact assessments, high‑level and low‑level designs, and technical change documentation.
Ensure designs are aligned with programme architecture, security constraints, and operational needs.

Change & Impact Assessment

Lead the technical impact assessment of Requests for Change (RFCs) and new requirements.
Clearly define technical scope, dependencies, risks and estimates for change delivery.
Support Project Managers with technically robust inputs to planning, costing and scheduling.

Stakeholder & Customer Engagement

Work directly with customer technical stakeholders to elicit, clarify and refine requirements.
Act as a trusted technical authority, able to explain complex technical topics clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
Collaborate effectively across Leidos engineering disciplines and third‑party suppliers.

Governance, Quality & Assurance

Ensure compliance with Leidos engineering standards, programme governance, and security policies.
Identify technical risks early and define mitigation strategies.
Support technical reviews, audits, and assurance activities as required.

Mentoring & Capability Development

Provide technical mentoring and coaching to junior and mid‑level engineers.

What Are We Looking For?

RSE is recruiting Control System Engineers across our business to join us in delivering solutions to the Water industry, based out of our Basingstoke office. You ll be in involved in the development, commissioning and support of automation and control systems solutions as well as automation and control systems design, specification, programming, simulation, testing and start-up assistance.

Some of Your Key Duties Include:

Be responsible for the appropriate planning and carrying out of intrusive surveys on live control systems. You will identify and manage the risks associated with these surveys.
Detailed design proposals that establish the scope of work required for new build and ICA refurbishment projects.

Assist the electrical engineers with the development of robust Control Systems Architectures utilising appropriate technology in accordance with Client, WIMES and industrial standards.

What Do You Need?

Experienced working knowledge of Profibus, ProfNet, Ethernet. Modbus and DH+ systems
