Role Overview
As a Test System Software Engineer, you will work at the intersection of software, hardware, and manufacturing. You will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving production test systems while working closely with production teams to diagnose and resolve issues on the manufacturing line.
You will have a direct impact on manufacturing yield, failure detection, and production throughput. Your automations and data tooling will be used daily on the production line, making the difference between manual firefighting and predictable, scalable manufacturing.
This is not a QA or software-only testing role. The position focuses on production test automation tool development with hardware interaction, and manufacturing support.

The Role
Industrial Automation Engineer for a Aircraft Manufacturer in UK
Your Responsibilities The designated service will execute the following work packages:
Incident Management & Coordination: o Serve as the single point of contact (SPOC) for all Automation hardware outages.
o Identify necessary technical actions and mobilize the appropriate teams immediately upon incident report.
o Facilitate real-time communication between all parties to prevent create silo.
Asset & Strategy Intelligence: o Conduct detailing of all the assets in the plant which are part of the Industrial Automation layer
o Develop and maintain a comprehensive Industrial Asset Database.
o Map typical failure modes and hardware-specific outage triggers.
o Draft Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and pre-defined response plans for each asset class.
Governance & Accountability: o Design and implement a RASCI Model to eliminate ambiguity in decision-making and hardware provision
The RASCI Framework To ensure a proactive approach, the coordinator will define the following roles for every major asset category:
Responsible: The party tasked with the physical repair or technical resolution and/or the provision and procurement of replacement hardware and components.
Accountable: The individual who owns the final decision and the “stop/go” authority.
Support: Those providing the tools, data, or secondary labor to assist the Responsible party.
Consulted: Subject matter experts (SMEs) whose opinions are sought before actions are finalized.
Informed: Parties who must be kept up-to-date on progress (e.g., leadership, end-users).
Deliverables Industrial Asset Registry: A digital database of all hardware under scope (single source of truth).
Outage Response Playbook: Step-by-step guides for common hardware failures.
Belfast RASCI Matrix: A signed-off document defining inter-departmental duties and provisioning roles.
Hardware Procurement Logs: Documentation of hardware provision and lead times for critical spares.
Incident Log & Post-Mortem Reports: Documentation of every outage to drive continuous improvement.
Your Profile Essential Skills / Knowledge / Experience: Good understanding of Industrial Automation Layer
Understanding of different PLC’s and connectivity with different devices on the shop floor
Manufacturing industry knowledge, Aero industry knowledge is an added advantage
Working knowledge of OPC and different IT solutions used for PLC communication
Strong stakeholder management skills
Working knowledge of any industrial standard SCADA platform
Desirable Skills / Knowledge / Experience: Good to have below skills (additionally with essential skills)
