Full Stack Developer, Publishing & Journalism
GUARDIAN NEWS AND MEDIA
London
Hybrid
Junior - Mid
£57,000
RECENTLY POSTED

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism, and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture. We are now looking for a Full Stack Developer to join our Publishing & Journalism team. You could be building the products that showcase our progressive and independent journalism, crafting the tools that journalists use to tell their stories or developing the services that allow those stories to be distributed across the globe, and monetised through emerging markets and AI technologies. About the role You’ll be coding on the frontend and backend of one of our systems in order to make an impact towards your team's objectives, typically in Typescript and Scala. You’ll be working in a cross-functional team, which is empowered to rapidly iterate and release new features. You won’t be coding in isolation - our culture is strongly collaborative, whether pair programming with other developers or working closely with editorial and commercial colleagues. Sometimes deciding what code to write is as hard as writing the code itself. As an engineer you’ll be involved in product decisions as well as technical ones. You’ll be encouraged to grow - we support moving between teams and roles in order to learn new skills and technologies in whatever direction you choose. Much of our code is openly available on GitHub, and some of our projects are widely used throughout the Open Source community. Many of our developers regularly attend and present at conferences. About you As a full-stack engineer, you’ll be comfortable working on the back-end and front-end. We typically use Scala and Typescript; you may not be familiar with Scala yet, but you should have a solid back-end knowledge in an equivalent programming language. If you have a Javascript background but don't have familiarity with Typescript, you should be happy to learn Typescript on the job. You are excited by the opportunity to shape the future of digital journalism and passionate about web technologies. Your interests go beyond just your team’s objectives; you are curious about where the organisation is moving as a whole. You have a strong interest in growing your skills. You can make reasoned choices regarding what technologies to use and when to use them. We actively encourage applications from groups traditionally underrepresented in the UK media We operate in a hybrid environment working 1 day a week from our offices in Kings Cross and 4 days a week remotely. We value and respect all differences (seen and unseen) in all people. We aspire to have inclusive working experiences and an environment that reflects the audience we serve, where our people have equal access to career development opportunities, their voices are heard and can contribute to our future. We actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. Many of our staff work flexibly and we will consider all requests for flexible working arrangements. How to apply To apply please upload your CV and covering letter as one document. You should highlight the extent to which your skills/experience meets the requirements of the role and your motivation behind applying. We appreciate the time taken to prepare each application we receive. We do not use AI-assisted technology to review applications; every application is reviewed by a member of our recruitment team. The closing date for applications is Monday 11th May 2026. All roles at the Guardian are open for everybody to apply. It is important to us that you feel supported and comfortable throughout your recruitment process, in order to perform your best. Please let us know if there are any changes we could make to help your application, this includes providing documents in accessible formats or personalising the process to better support your needs. Please contact Anna Vipers on anna.vipers@guardian.co.uk to discuss further so we can work with you to support you through your application. Benefits at the Guardian You'll have 30 days of annual leave per year (plus bank holidays) with the option to purchase an additional 5 days. Our pension scheme is generous; if you contribute 5% then we will contribute 8-12% (depending on your age). We believe in giving back, which is why employees are given 2 volunteering days annually and the option of payroll giving. Season ticket loans are also available. You are entitled to private healthcare, life cover, income protection, and eye tests. You can also opt in to dental insurance. We have enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave policies in place. We also support our employees by offering an IVF, menopause, baby loss, and trans equality policy. Culture and wellbeing We want everyone to feel like they belong at the Guardian and we champion diversity of thought. Are you looking for a job involving hands-on software engineering from day one, using new and evolving technologies to solve a real customer problem?

This role would suit an early-career software engineer whos happy in a small company environment, working closely with experienced founders to turn ideas into production systems. Someone curious, who likes to learn; a problem-solver who is comfortable with using analysis, experimentation and iteration to build a great product; a systems thinker who can consider the whole product experience as well as its component parts.

You’ll take ownership of technical work that helps unblock the CTO. Day-to-day, that will include software development within our front-end, back-end and internal apps, as well as technical analysis, experimentation and testing to help us improve the product. We’ll support you to work across the full engineering lifecycle, from scoping through to QA and release.

Your attitude to work and ability to learn are more important to us than your formal qualifications or years of experience. As a guide, the ideal candidate will probably have a degree in computer science, engineering, maths or a scientific discipline, and be proficient with TypeScript and core software tooling such as IDEs, issue trackers and Git.

A bit about us: Our business is all about applying AI and other technologies to deliver a better customer experience to people who need to buy insurance. We’re a small, early-stage company, which means we have to balance rigour with innovation. We need to move quickly, but with a high bar for responsibility.

We expect our company will look very different in a years time. If you find that unsettling, this role is probably not for you. We want to be upfront that were planning to grow and evolve, and were looking for people who are excited to join us on that journey. However if youre intrigued by this article, lets talk!
