Role Summary:

We are seeking Automation & AIOps Engineers who sit at the intersection of Site Reliability Engineering and modern AI driven operations. Embedded within Era4’s engineering led Operations Centre, this role exists to build a modern AI Platform Operations function from scratch, designing tooling, and agentic workflows. No legacy to deal with.

Runbook Automation & Agent Development:

• Build agentic, executable workflows capable of triaging, diagnosing, and where appropriate autonomously remediating known failure patterns.
• Build and maintain LLM backed agents targeting the observability stack, ITSM platform, and infrastructure APIs (e.g. DCIM, IPAM, hypervisor layers).
• Develop auditable Client focused automations, for Client interactions and workflows, with appropriate controls.
• Develop safe, auditable automation with appropriate controls for higher risk platform actions.

Operational Tooling & Self Service Enablement:

• Build internal tooling that empowers engineers and service desk analysts: CLI utilities, ChatOps integrations (Slack/Teams bots), status dashboards, and self service automation hooks.
• Reduce dependency on DevSecOps and engineering teams for routine operational tasks through automation.
• Maintain and contribute a library of automation assets, agent prompts, and runbook as code artefacts, version controlled and peer reviewed.
• Develop the automation layer around monitoring and event management: alert suppression logic, enrichment pipelines, correlation rules, and alert to ticket integrations.
• Continuously tune signal to noise ratios across monitoring tooling (Prometheus, Mimir, Grafana, or equivalent) to improve situational awareness.
• Design and implement event correlation and deduplication logic to reduce alert storms and improve incident context.
• Identify common Operational patterns and tasks as candidates for automation; maintain and prioritise a toil reduction backlog.
• Participate in post incident reviews and translate findings into updated automation, runbooks, or agent logic.
• Contribute to the evolution of Era4’s operational standards, tooling architecture, and agent framework.

Technical - Core Element:

• Strong Python development skills, including scripting for automation, API integration, and data processing.
• Hands on experience with observability and monitoring platforms: Prometheus, Grafana, Mimir, or equivalent.
• Experience integrating with ITSM platforms (ServiceNow, Halo, Jira Service Management, or similar) via API.
• Solid understanding of event driven architectures, message queues, and webhook based automation patterns.
• Strong understanding of managing GPU infrastructure in production, key signals and metrics and the automation of workflows.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code principles and cloud native environments (Kubernetes, Terraform, or similar).

Technical - Agent & AI:

• Demonstrable experience building LLM powered agents or automation using frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, the Anthropic SDK, OpenAI function calling, or comparable tooling.
• Understanding of agentic design patterns: tool use, structured output, human in the loop controls, and chain of thought reasoning for operational tasks.
• Comfort operating in an API first environment, integrating agents with infrastructure APIs, DCIM, IPAM, and hypervisor control planes.

Operational:

• Prior experience in an SRE, Senior Operations, or Platform Engineering environment, with exposure to on call operations and incident management processes.
• Experience in converting narrative runbooks into executable automation or codified decision trees.
• Understanding of ITIL aligned incident and change management principles and ITSM tooling.

We are looking for aFull-Stack Senior Software Engineerto join our cross-functional Health Insights squad.Join us at an early stage as we develop a platform that delivers personalised health insights to millions of participants across the UK.You’llhelp shape systems working with complex, sensitivehealthand genetic data, supporting meaningful, real-world outcomes.

In this role,you will:

• Help shape the architecture and direction of an early-stage platform

Technical Skills

• Experience building cloud-hosted consumer applications usingopen sourcetechnologies such as Pythonor Node
• Knowledge of modern frontend development, including JavaScript/TypeScript with frameworks like React or Next.js, and experience building intuitive, user-focused interfaces

This is a high-impact role centered on Platform Engineering and Developer Experience (DevEx). You will take full ownership of our internal development ecosystem, evolving it into a robust, self-service platform that abstracts infrastructure complexity. Your goal is to design and maintain the “Golden Path”: the standardized, automated route from local code to a production-ready state. You are a versatile engineer who views infrastructure as a product and internal developers as your primary customers.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Platform Product Management: Take end-to-end ownership of the internal developer platform, identifying bottlenecks in the software delivery lifecycle and building automated solutions to resolve them.
• Golden Path Engineering: Architect and evolve standardized deployment patterns that bake in security, compliance, and observability, allowing product teams to focus strictly on business logic.
• Tooling Infrastructure: Manage the lifecycle of our self-hosted engineering suite (e.g., GitLab), ensuring high availability, performance, and seamless integration with the wider ecosystem.
• Continuous Delivery Evolution: Drive the adoption of modern deployment methodologies (such as GitOps) to ensure declarative, reproducible, and audited state management across all environments.
• Building secure, robust software by adhering to secure coding standards (e.g., OWASP) and internal security policies throughout the development lifecycle.

You should have:

• Platform Ownership: 3+ years of experience building or scaling internal developer platforms or sophisticated CI/CD ecosystems.
• Architectural Versatility: Deep understanding of cloud-native primitives (Compute, Networking, Storage) and the ability to implement them across different providers or hybrid environments.
• Orchestration Expertise: Proven ability to manage container orchestration at scale, focusing on abstracting complexity for end-users rather than just “managing clusters.”
• Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Expert-level proficiency in declarative configuration management and modular code design (e.g., Terraform, OpenTofu, or Pulumi).
• Automation Mindset: Strong competency in scripting or systems programming (Python, Go, or Bash) to glue disparate systems into a unified platform.

Ideally, you would also have:

• Self-Hosted Infrastructure Management: Experience maintaining and scaling critical engineering tools (e.g., GitLab, Artifactory, or SonarQube) at the enterprise level, including backup/restore and high-availability strategies.
• Evolutionary Architecture: Proven experience migrating workloads between platforms (e.g., EC2 to EKS, or cross-cloud) with a focus on data integrity and minimal downtime.
• Observability as a Service: Ability to implement standardized telemetry pipelines (e.g., OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, or ELK) that provide developers with out-of-the-box visibility into their services.
• Platform Security (DevSecOps): Familiarity with automated policy enforcement and compliance-as-code (e.g., OPA, Kyverno, or AWS Config) to maintain CyberEssentials+/ISO standards without manual intervention.
• Software Engineering Fundamentals: Proficiency in a high-level language (Go, Python, or Rust) to build custom controllers, CLI tools, or API shims that enhance the platform’s capabilities.
• FinOps & Resource Efficiency: Experience implementing automated cost-attribution and rightsizing logic to ensure the platform remains economically sustainable as it scales.
• Knowledge of service mesh architectures: Istio or Linkerd, for traffic management and mTLS.
• Experience with classified networks: Experience with Official Sensitive and/or Sensitive networks.

Security clearance

We believe in working closely with defence customers. As a result, this role will require the individual to hold a clearance or be willing to undergo UK security vetting to Security Check (SC) or above. This normally requires having continuous residency in the UK for at least 5 years.

Office vs Hybrid working

We are focused on building a positive, collaborative engineering-driven culture. Overview

Currently, delivery teams seeking to build or procure digital products within the Cabinet Office must navigate a highly complex and fragmented assurance landscape. Critical compliance rules and policies are often hidden or difficult to locate, and the manual nature of the process frequently traps teams in frustrating administrative bottlenecks and dependency loops.

To address this, we are developing a “Digital Assurance Navigator” platform that translates these complex policies into an automated, machine-readable rules engine. Because we are currently in the Alpha phase, we are prototyping an intelligent, AI-driven interface that interviews users about their project and dynamically generates a tailored, step-by-step checklist of exactly what is required to achieve compliance.

We are seeking a Lead DevOps Engineer to help us map this complex ecosystem and design an intuitive, user-centred journey that removes friction and guides teams safely from inception to deployment

Job description

The Lead DevOps Engineer will contribute to and lead activities related to building on our AWS platforms. This includes building new products, and re-platforming workloads to cloud-native architectures. They will design and implement secure, scalable, and cost-efficient AWS solutions using modern engineering patterns such as containerisation, serverless computing, automated IaC deployments, and improved observability.

You will work closely with a product, UCD, and engineering team to ensure the adoption of modern platforms and tooling while embedding best practice approaches for resilience, automation, and operational readiness across services.
