Overview

Our client, a leading consultancy within the high-hazard engineering sector, is seeking a Senior or Principal Technical Safety Engineer to support a growing portfolio of UK and international projects.

This role will focus on delivering high-quality technical safety and risk engineering work across sectors including energy, chemicals and other high-hazard industries. The successful candidate will operate in a client-facing consultancy environment, supporting both project delivery and wider business objectives.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will deliver high-quality technical work across a range of process safety projects.

Typical responsibilities will include:

Delivery of Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA), including onshore studies

Supporting or leading development of COMAH Safety Reports and Offshore Safety Cases

Identification and assessment of major accident hazards and risk profiles

Application of ALARP principles and recommendation of appropriate risk reduction measures

Participation in, and ideally leadership of, Process Hazard Analysis workshops (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, FMECA, Bowtie)

Technical report writing and preparation of client deliverables

Supporting multidisciplinary project teams across consultancy projects

Client interaction and contribution to commercial/project delivery discussions

Occasional UK and international travel for client and site-based work.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates should demonstrate a strong technical background in process safety, engineering risk management or a related discipline.

The successful candidate will:

Have several years experience in Technical Safety or Process Safety within a consultancy or high-hazard operating environment

Demonstrate a strong understanding of Quantitative Risk Assessment methodologies

Have knowledge of COMAH Safety Report and/or Offshore Safety Case requirements

Be able to identify, assess and communicate risk, including application of ALARP principles

Possess strong analytical and problem-solving capability

Be highly numerate with strong technical judgement

Have excellent communication and technical report writing skills

Be a reliable team player with a commercial awareness

Desirable Experience

Experience leading Process Hazard Analysis workshops (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA etc.)

Experience using QRA software such as PHAST and SAFETI

Programming or advanced analytical skills (Excel, VBA, Python, C++)

Membership of a relevant professional institution

Qualifications

Degree in Engineering or Science (Chemical Engineering or Physics preferred)

Professional membership or chartership advantageous

Working Arrangements

As the tech Lead, your focus will be on:

  • Designing and delivering automation and AI solutions for a range of SMEs
  • Building out a library of reusable modules, components and internal frameworks
  • Engaging directly with stakeholders to understand needs and to identify opportunities
  • Solution architecture inc. defining solution patterns, approach and best practice
  • Growing and leading a team of Engineers as the client base further grows
  • Defining and documenting the technical roadmap, toolset, environment and processes

  • API design, integration, authentication
  • Python, JavaScript or similar scripting languages
  • AI/ML models (LLMs, embeddings, classification, summarisation)
  • Data wrangling and ETL tools
  • Cloud platforms and serverless architectures
  • RPA or orchestration frameworks
