About the Role:

What will your typical day look like?

  • You will be working on projects, such as the Cabinet Office WordPress support contract, to keep our clients’ systems up-to-date, available, resilient, secure, performing well and cost effective.
  • Working to improve the efficiency of our infrastructure related processes
  • At times you’ll need to work together with clients’ own internal teams and with any external infrastructure teams that Affinity may partner with.
  • Putting together infrastructure design documents at the start of projects, with a view to getting these signed off by the client and then acting as the basis for infrastructure build.
  • Building infrastructure on new projects through the use of Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, etc. This will also include continuous integration processes, server provisioning, etc.
  • Imparting knowledge and experience to other Affinity team members, both verbally and also captured in tools such as Jira Confluence, where we would like to build up a repository of DevOps how-tos, best practices, etc.
  • Opportunity to work as a team lead where other Affinity team members are involved in DevOps.
  • Providing AWS and Azure thought leadership and mentoring in both advisory and delivery contexts.
  • Supporting out-of-hours rotas to provide support coverage for contracts in place with Affinity.

About you:

General requirements:

  • Willingness to provide on-call rota coverage of emergency support (24/7/365)

  • Ability to work flexible hours from time to time, for specific projects or tasks

  • UK based and resident in UK for last 3 years (given some client-driven security clearance requirements)

  • The role is fully remote, though visits to clients and to our office in Cornwall will occasionally be required

Your role

You will lead a multidisciplinary team of approximately 15 staff members including software engineers, bioinformaticians, designers and UX experts to build infrastructures to serve and disseminate biological data. These methods of dissemination include visualisations, data explorers, and application programming interfaces (APIs). Your team will be responsible for leading the creation of novel data stores, serving the needs of researchers in both high and low resource settings, and transitioning Ensembl to an AI-ready resource. You will also investigate the application of AI-based tools to improve Ensembl services and processes.

You will work closely with other Team Leaders within Ensembl, and more broadly with leadership across EMBL-EBI and other EMBL sites to deliver integrated systems and data flows between our EMBL key partners. You will also be a lead contact with EMBL-EBIs IT Technical Services, who provide the underlying IT infrastructure behind our resources.

In this role, you will use your knowledge of systems architecture and design to guide your team to develop sustainable, scalable solutions. You will also coordinate the development of new interfaces and tools alongside the maintenance of existing tools and codebases including migration of these to new technologies and infrastructure. Your knowledge and experience will be key to developing achievable strategies and roadmaps in a collaborative approach with colleagues in the wider Ensembl team. An essential part of this role is anticipating future demands from biological research, evaluating technical advances and balancing these with the continued delivery of key priorities.

Overview

The Infrastructure Automation Engineering Service will support the technical team responsible for the design, development, documentation, building and validation of infrastructure automation components which form part of the NSoIT(D) Platform. These automation components will primary be developed using Python3, Ansible and Bash with a focus on hardware components, specifically their various features, services, and configurations, as well as interactions with external REST/SOAP APIs and services. The team’s responsibilities include:

  • Apply complex problem solving to “reverse engineer” applications, designs and manual build instructions to create zero touch automation packages that are parameterised, dynamic and able to repeatedly and reliably deploy against these designs. Often these applications are legacy, were created without automation in mind or are otherwise resistive to full, zero touch automation.
  • Create production quality code, following industry standard best practices as well as internal policies and procedures, utilising Version Control mechanisms such as GIT and BitBucket to submit development code as well as peer reviewing other team members’ code modules.
  • Production and review of all levels of design artefacts.
  • Supporting wider NSoIT(D) system testing activities.
  • Working with Service Management to resolve issues.

Essential skills, qualifications and experience

In order to deliver this service, it is essential that individuals have:

  • At least 12months’ demonstrable hands on experience within the last 3 years of:
    • Creating complex Python3 automation Classes for production systems
    • Using configuration management tools e.g. Ansible, Puppet, Chef
    • Use of scripting languages e.g. Bash
    • Automated deployment of server, network and storage technologies across multiple vendors
    • Building or supporting large infrastructure environments
    • Troubleshooting hardware or software component failure
    • Working as part of an Agile development team
  • Demonstrable experience with advanced Python3 coding features e.g. Workflows, Desired State Configuration (DSC) and Bare Metal Deployment
  • At least one of the following professional certifications that have been obtained within the last five years:
