Principal Engineer

Rate Inside IR35

Remote, with occasional travel to London, Manchester, Newcastle

Role Purpose

The Principal Engineer will provide senior technical leadership for a complex mainframe modernisation programme characterised by a large case load, high throughput, and significant scalability and resilience requirements. The role is accountable for shaping and assuring solution design, enforcing engineering standards, and guiding delivery teams operating in a highgovernance public sector environment.

This role combines deep handson technical expertise with strategic oversight, ensuring modern cloudnative platforms are delivered securely, reliably, and in line with government architectural, engineering, and assurance expectations. As the programme scales, the role may extend to multiteam and multivendor technical oversight.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Demonstrable experience as a Principal Engineer on largescale modernisation or platform programmes.
• Strong background in cloudnative engineering on AWS, including Kubernetesbased platforms.
• Deep handson experience with Java, Spring Boot, and Node.js, building scalable and resilient backend services.
• Experience modernising or integrating with mainframe or legacy enterprise systems in highvolume environments.
• Proven ability to enforce engineering standards and operate effectively within highgovernance, regulated, or public sector contexts.
• Strong understanding of Agile delivery, DevOps practices, CI/CD, and engineering lifecycle management.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce and assure highquality technical documentation.
