We are currently recruiting for an experienced Authorising Engineer (Electrical) to provide technical leadership and compliance assurance across a large, complex estate.
This is a home-based role with significant national travel, covering sites from the South Coast through to Newcastle, so candidates must be comfortable travelling extensively and working independently across multiple locations.
Travel expenses are paid from your home address, and the successful candidate will ideally be based in the Midlands or surrounding areas to allow effective coverage of the portfolio.
The Role
As an Authorising Engineer (Electrical), you will provide technical oversight and assurance for electrical systems and Safe Systems of Work across the estate, ensuring compliance with JSP375 and associated electrical safety regulations.
You will work closely with operational teams and senior stakeholders to ensure electrical infrastructure is managed safely and that operational procedures are consistently applied.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing technical guidance and oversight to Authorised Persons (APs) responsible for electrical systems
- Auditing compliance with Safe Systems of Work and JSP375 procedures
- Conducting site inspections, risk assessments and technical audits
- Producing audit reports and recommending corrective actions
- Supporting the investigation of incidents and dangerous occurrences related to permit-to-work systems
- Advising on the application of JSP375 during new works, project delivery and system modifications
- Providing technical input during commissioning and project integration activities
- Supporting the appointment, training and competence assessment of Authorised Persons
- Maintaining records of AP authorisations and operational competence
- Advising senior management on technical compliance and safety risks
Candidate Requirements
Due to the nature of the role, ONLY candidates who are Chartered or Incorporated Engineers will be considered.
Essential requirements:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status
- Strong electrical engineering background (electrical bias essential)
- Significant experience working within Safe Systems of Work
- Demonstrable knowledge and experience of JSP375
- Experience with high voltage electrical infrastructure up to 33kV
- Strong working knowledge of relevant standards including:
- BS 7671
- ESQCR
- BS EN 50522
- Understanding of arc flash and incident energy risk
- Experience auditing and supporting operational engineering teams
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationally
Desirable experience:
- Interpreting protection and grading studies
- Reviewing substation designs
- Knowledge of hazardous area standards such as BS EN 60079
