Description

Our client, a reputable entity in the Defence & Security sector, is presently seeking a PCB Layout Engineer on a contract basis. This role is embedded within the Cyber Business Unit, focusing on the layout of complex multi-layer (4 - 20 layers) Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs).

Key Responsibilities

  • Layout complex multi-layer (4 - 20 layers) rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible PCBs that contain through, buried, and blind vias, adhering to established processes.
  • Design PCB layouts for analogue, RF, digital, power, high-speed, and highly reliable circuits in line with DO-254 regulations, if applicable.
  • Ensure PCB designs consider security, EMC, and TEMPEST implications and guidelines.
  • Incorporate test points into the layout to facilitate testing without compromising performance, based on input from Production Test.
  • Collaborate with the electronic hardware team to meet circuit requirements like trace impedances, separations, EMC and TEMPEST considerations, and signal integrity rules.
  • Coordinate with PCB fabricators and assembly houses to ensure adherence to stack-up, DRC, DFM, and DFT requirements.
  • Work with mechanical engineers to align PCB designs with their specifications and space requirements.
  • Engage with procurement and supply chain teams to ensure a seamless transition to manufacturing.
  • Manage CAD library administration including symbol, footprint generation, and database upkeep.
  • Balance and prioritise multiple projects efficiently, delivering under pressure.
  • Participate in design reviews with electrical and mechanical hardware engineers.
  • Maintain and enhance knowledge of best practice PCB design processes and tools.
  • Estimate time and effort for PCB design activities, ensuring adherence to cost and schedule.
  • Propose improvements in tools, processes, and techniques for quality and innovation in PCB design.
  • Lead or actively contribute to project aspects, balancing requirements, schedule, and cost optimally.
  • Generate and review technical proposals, providing estimates for effort, costs, and risks, contributing to bids and proposals leading to contract awards.
  • Clearly convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Required Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering, mathematics, science, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in PCB design, including routing and layout of complex, high-density circuit assemblies.
  • Proficiency in using industry-standard PCB layout and simulation toolsets.
  • Knowledge of routing practices, guidelines, and IPC standards.
  • Experience implementing DFM and DFT features on PCBs and performing review processes with suppliers.
  • Proven experience using modern design tools with a successful track record in designing various PCBs, including multi-layer, high-speed digital, RF, analogue, and power distribution.

Desirable Experience, Skills and Qualifications (optional)

  • Experience with signal integrity analysis on routed PCBs.
  • Understanding of power distribution and thermal aspects of PCB design.
  • Familiarity with Gerber file and ODB++ manipulation.
  • Experience with complex layout using Altium or PADs.
  • Ability to create schematics using Altium or PADs.
  • Experience using Windchill for version control.

If you are a skilled PCB Layout Engineer eager to contribute to cutting-edge projects in the Defence & Security sector, we would be delighted to hear from you. Apply now to embark on this exciting contract opportunity.
