Were looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a leading engineering team based in Derby!
Were specifically seeking engineers with experience designing bespoke machinery used in packaging, food processing, conveyors, or robotic systems within production or process environments.
This is a hands-on, project-led role where youll take ownership of mechanical designs from concept through to commissioning. Each machine you design is high-value, worth approximately £350,000+, and has a real impact in live manufacturing settings. Youll be working in a modern, clean, and highly organised facility an environment designed to help engineers excel.

What youll be doing
- Lead mechanical engineering projects from initial concept through to on-site commissioning
- Design mechanical components, mechanisms, and assemblies for packaging machines
- Create accurate 3D models and detailed engineering drawings using SolidWorks
- Draft User Requirement Specifications (URS) and Design Specifications (DS)
- Manage Bills of Materials (BOMs) and all supporting technical documentation
- Collaborate with subcontractors and support procurement efforts
- Develop and test prototypes; troubleshoot and resolve design issues
- Ensure all machines meet safety and compliance standards
- Produce operator manuals, maintenance guides, and documentation packs
Hours

Flexible day shifts (38 hours per week, Monday-Friday)

Monday-Thursday: choice of 7am-3:30pm / 7:30am-4pm / 8am-4:30pm / 8:30am-5pm

Friday: choice of 7am-1pm / 7:30am-1:30pm / 8am-2pm / 8:30am-2:30pm (early finish!)
Pay
£35,000 - £45,000 per annum (Depending on Experience)
Skills/Experience Required
- Minimum 3 years experience designing special-purpose machinery, ideally in packaging, food production or Automation
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field
- Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (or similar 3D CAD software)
- Strong understanding of mechanical systems, materials and manufacturing methods
- Experience producing CAD drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation
- Proven ability to develop prototypes, solve engineering problems and meet deadlines
- Excellent organisation, communication, and team-working skills
