Overview My client is supporting its public body on large-scale, mission-critical digital services. Were looking for a hands-on DevOps Engineer to strengthen delivery, reliability and security across cloud-native platforms and CI/CD pipelines.
Key Responsibilities Build, maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines (build, test, deploy, release automation).
Implement IaC for repeatable, secure environments (prod/non-prod).
Operate and optimise Kubernetes/Docker-based services (scalability, reliability, cost).
Improve observability (logging, metrics, tracing), SRE practices and incident response.
Embed DevSecOps: secrets management, policy-as-code, vulnerability remediation.
Collaborate with developers, architects and security on delivery best practices.
Produce documentation/runbooks; contribute to standards and governance.
Must-Have Skills Cloud: AWS (core services, networking, IAM, cost-aware design).
Containers & Orchestration: Docker, Kubernetes (EKS preferred).
IaC: Terraform (modules, workspaces, state management), Ansible.
CI/CD: GitLab CI or similar (GitHub Actions/Azure DevOps), artifact/versioning.
Scripting: Bash and/or Python for automation.
OS & Networking: Linux, DNS, VPC/Subnets, Security Groups, load balancers.
Observability: Prometheus/Grafana, ELK/Opensearch, CloudWatch.
Security: Secrets management (e.g., AWS Secrets Manager/HashiCorp Vault), vulnerability scanning (Snyk/Trivy), policy-as-code (OPA/Conftest).
Nice-to-Have GitOps (Argo CD / Flux) and Helm charts.
Service mesh (Istio/Linkerd) or advanced networking policies.
Compliance in UK public sector (NCSC cloud principles), Well-Architected.
Experience on large government programmes.
Deliverables Stable, secure CI/CD pipelines and IaC baselines.
Kubernetes platform improvements (scaling, reliability, cost).
Observability dashboards and actionable alerts.
Runbooks and documentation for operations and incident management.
