Role Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and proactive Health, Safety & Environment Manager to join our client’s operations in Barnsley. This is a key role responsible for driving a positive safety culture across fast-paced telecoms and utilities environments.
You will be a visible, influential presence on-site-supporting site teams, operational managers, and field crews to maintain the highest standards of safety and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide professional HSE guidance across telecoms utility operations, ensuring full legislative and client compliance.
- Conduct site inspections, audits, and risk assessments, promoting best practice and strong incident prevention.
- Lead investigations into incidents, near misses, and non-conformances, ensuring effective close-out and learning.
- Deliver HSE training, toolbox talks, and on-site coaching to support a positive safety culture.
- Ensure alignment with ISO 18001, NERS, SMAS, and other relevant standards.
- Analyse safety performance trends and produce clear reports with actionable recommendations.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within HSE and operational teams.
- Represent the business during client audits, meetings, and programme reviews.
- Ensure full compliance with HSG47 and safe excavation practices.
Essential Requirements
- NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level 6 in Occupational Health & Safety
- Extensive experience managing H&S within highways excavation environments
- Strong and proven knowledge of HSG47 (Avoiding Danger from Underground Services) - essential
- Full UK Driving Licence and willingness to travel across Yorkshire
- Strong influencing, coaching, and communication skills
- Proactive, hands-on approach with a passion for safety culture improvement
Desirable Experience
- Background in telecoms or utilities
- Knowledge of CDM Regulations
- ISO management systems auditing
- Incident investigation training (TapRooT, ICAM, etc.)
- Strong report writing and interpersonal skills
