This is an exciting opportunity to join the Castrol Technology Team, working at the forefront of advanced motorsport fuels while inputting a strategic view on global fuel technology for the wider Castrol business. Based within the Motorsport Technology Team, you will provide expert technical knowledge on next-generation, high-performance fuels and components for Castrol and its motorsport partners. You will also inform the business on regional fuel specifications and deliver strategic insights on how evolving fuel regulations, legislations, and technologies may influence and impact future powertrain and lubricant solutions, helping both our internal participants and external partners achieve their goals.

What does the day to day look like?

You will combine experienced guidance for motorsport fuel programmes with strategic responsibilities for informing the Castrol lubricants business. Your primary focus will be to shape the future strategy and define the optionality for motorsport fuels by advancing renewable raw‑material availability and sourcing, seeing opportunities for implementation of new data tools, initiating R&D programmes, and providing overall technical knowledge. Acting as a trusted subject matter authority to the team’s OEM Project Leaders, you will guide innovation and enable future capabilities across the motorsport fuel portfolio. The role requires close collaboration with the Senior Advisor for Automotive Technology and the wider Castrol Technology Team to ensure global fuel standards and their future evolution are fully considered when forming near and long‑term strategies. You will collaborate extensively with a broad range of internal and external partners.

Key Responsibilities:

Guide future motorsport fuel formulation strategy and optionality grounded on current and emerging fuel technology and regulatory requirements.
Source, investigate and develop fuel components for the motorsport development team, targeting long-term performance opportunities aligned to motorsport regulations. Building and maintaining relationships with suppliers of novel renewable fuel components.
Display leadership behaviours, deputising for the Team Leader when required, managing tasks such as budgeting and forecasting, and driving the team to innovate through new R&D initiatives.
Provide expert knowledge on novel combustion technology and motorsport fuel formulation to meet and exceed Castrol’s partner’s performance expectations.
Find opportunities to apply advanced computational modelling techniques and lead projects to implement them.
Oversee operational delivery to legacy motorsport partners, including blending, product approval, and timely dispatch, ensuring consistent quality and compliance with established standards.
Coach and mentor technologists, providing technical leadership to colleagues across the Motorsport Technology Team.
Ensure the continued technical support and operational delivery of specialised Castrol fuel solutions for key non-racing partners, including overseeing blending, product validation, and timely dispatch to maintain quality, compliance, and performance standards.
Represent Castrol in technical and regulatory forums and conferences related to fuel technology.
Assess and communicate the impact that evolving global fuel technology trends, regulatory changes, sustainability initiatives, and OEM developments will have on propulsion and lubricant technology and provide insights to lubricant product development projects and OEM partnerships.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams in creation of supply agreements / contracts and aligning technical guidance with colleagues to focus on research and development, product stewardship, legal, and marketing.

What do we want to see from you!

Essential

Degree or equivalent experience in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related technical field, with a Masters/PhD qualification or additional relevant industry certifications will be preferred.
Expert-level knowledge and extensive experience in the formulation, development and testing of fuels and mobility products, spanning combustion, combustion engine technology, hybrids, and emerging powertrain technologies.
Proven experience leading R&D projects focused on renewable or sustainable fuels, with strong knowledge of novel, sustainable fuel‑production technologies.
Deep understanding of vehicle propulsion and calibration technology, and the ability to translate this into impacts on motorsport and commercial technology.
Consistent track record in leading cross-functional teams, managing projects, budgets, timelines, and technical risks.

We have a great opportunity to join Castrol’s Motorsport Technology Team as a Senior Technologist, where you will be project lead for the development and testing of Castrol’s next generation motorsport lubricants in race categories such as Formula One, MotoGP, Formula E, WRC, DAKAR and NASCAR.

What does the day to day look like?

The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team, working on rapid-turnaround research and development programmes to deliver a variety of innovative lubricants, greases, Dielectric, and any other fluids that our motorsport partners need technical support for. The products being developed with provide the highest levels of performance, durability, and sustainability possible. You will be the lubricant authority for your tagged motorsport team and will be in direct contact with engineers and senior leadership from some of the top motorsport teams in the world.

Key Responsibilities:

Act as the primary technical interface for assigned motorsport partners by providing experienced lubricant development support, building strong networks across their technical organisations, and delivering detailed engineering insights directly to OEM teams.
Handle lubricant development projects end‑to‑end by planning, accomplishing, documenting, and delivering R&D programmes to agreed achievements, budgets, and trackside‑driven timelines.
Lead the development and optimisation of high‑performance motorsport fluids by formulating, refining, and validating products for engines, transmissions, chassis systems, and motorsport factory applications.
Design and implement comprehensive fluid test programmes that investigate critical design characteristics including tribology, rheology, lubrication regimes, viscosity behaviour, surface chemistry, thermal stability, and other essential performance properties.
Collaborate across bp‑Castrol’s technology, operations, and commercial functions by engaging with subject-matter guides, analysts, stewardship, IP, legal, quality, logistics, and external suppliers to ensure seamless delivery of development programmes.
Coordinate lubricant quality control and product release by reviewing analytical data, approving or rejecting batches, maintaining customer‑specific limits, and driving corrective actions where performance expectations are not met.
Coordinate with Castrol’s operational teams by preparing blending instructions, validating raw materials, and providing the support required to successfully manufacture motorsport‑specific fluids for use in partners’ factories and at race events.

About the role:

The Advanced Electrification Testing (AET) team sits within the Applied Sciences division of bp’s Technology arm. The purpose of the team is to undertake testing, provide engineering support and thought leadership to Castrol’s Research and Product Development teams. Areas of current technology development are centered on thermal management fluids for electric vehicle batteries, data centers, and electric vehicle charging equipment.

The team is responsible for a several testing facilities at the bp Pangbourne Technology Centre. Currently a major programmed of investment is in progress to transition the campus into a center of excellence for electric mobility and energy technologies. In the coming years the AET team will operate a new battery testing center with capability for climatic testing of battery cells, modules and packs and electric vehicle chargers. There is also a newly opened Data Centre Test Facility which includes several immersion tanks for server testing.

The Senior Engineer will be primarily responsible for the execution of testing and engineering projects in support of Castrol’s research and development teams. This can encompass a wide variety different activities ranging from multiple replicate tests on an established test method / apparatus through to development of novel and innovative testing techniques on the latest developmental equipment.

The scope of the AET team current spans, mobility, power and data center industries with applications ranging from electric vehicle batteries through to data center servers and networks. However, in each the technical areas of focus in our projects are invariably, thermal management and cooling, system power flow control and measurement, electronics performance, instrumentation and high accuracy testing to produce meaningful conclusions. Whilst to a degree all members of the AET are expected to have a basic proficiency in all of these areas, the Senior Engineer may have a specialist in at least one of these.

The Senior Engineer will work largely autonomously with the project / test requestors in all aspects of the project definition, execution and reporting, seeking support from the Expert Engineer, and AET manager if required. They will act as a role model to the more junior members of the team in all aspects of their work; technically, operationally and in leadership and behaviors. They will regularly work with the Engineers, Technicians, Graduates and Interns to provide guidance and support.

For the benefit of the whole AET team and beyond, the Senior Engineer will act as a thought leader, identifying new opportunities, acting as an ambassador for Castrol in industry and disseminating knowledge throughout the organization.

This specialist role is within our Forensic A/V Laboratory Team based in the Edinburgh area who provide support throughout Scotland.
