As a Fellow you’ll be expected to jump in and work as part of a team while being provided with the support and learning to acquire the skills of a developer. Fellows join our Product and Engineering team which is responsible for creating, developing, managing and maintaining the Guardian’s digital products. Assessment is around demonstrating your practical skills and sharing your experiences. We’re looking for people who want to contribute to the Guardian’s future. We foster an environment in which you can learn and develop your career. As a Fellow, you will rotate between two teams throughout the year with a focus on learning and have an understanding of different parts of the Engineering department. You will spend 6 months on one team and then 6 months in another, giving you the opportunity to explore different technologies and the different ways teams work together to achieve a common goal. Our engineers enjoy learning and sharing what they do and they work on some unique challenges. Every Thursday we have Tech Time where developers share technical learnings and we run internal coding classes such as a Scala school. We’ll ensure over the 12 months you will have time to meet and spend time with different roles within the Product and Engineering department and learn how the work we do supports the Guardian mission. If you love technology and coding and are excited at contributing to the Guardian’s future then please do apply. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a call with the recruitment team to discuss their application and motivations for applying in more detail. Our interview process involves two stages: a pairing test and a face to face interview. The deadline for receipt of applications is 5pm on Thursday 26th February 2026.

Interviews will take place on Friday 20th and Monday 23rd March in person at our Kings Cross office. We aim to provide feedback to all candidates by the end of March 2026.

Senior Android Engineer / Android Technical Lead / Mobile Developer / Mobile Engineer / Android Developer/ Kotlin

Not every Android role is about shipping another consumer app.

This one is for an Android engineer who enjoys owning technical decisions, working close to the platform, and solving problems around reliability, performance and data at scale. The kind of challenges you only really get once apps are live, widely deployed and relied on.

It’s a hands-on role with real ownership, despite the title, there’s no line management just responsibility for doing Android properly and helping others do the same.

What you’ll be working on:

You’ll take ownership of Android apps and SDKs used in real-world, data heavy environments. The work is varied and genuinely technical.

Day to day, you will:

  • Own the Android architecture across apps and SDKs
  • Build and evolve features in Kotlin (with some Java and C++/NDK)
  • Deal with networking, performance, stability and edge cases
  • Stay ahead of Android OS and Google Play changes and guide the response
  • Support SDK integrations and help solve tricky production issues
  • Review code, challenge designs and help raise the bar technically
  • Use modern tooling (including AI-assisted coding tools) to move faster and write better code

Who this suits:

This role suits you if you:

  • Like being the go-to Android engineer
  • Enjoy thinking about architecture and long-term maintainability
  • Want influence without people management
  • Are comfortable going deep when things break in production

You’ll likely have:

  • Strong experience shipping Android apps in Kotlin
  • A solid grasp of Android networking (HTTP(S), TLS, sockets, proxies)
  • Experience with native code (C++ / NDK) or complex SDKs
  • Good understanding of Android APIs, versioning and Play Store policies
  • Strong debugging skills (crashes, performance, battery)
  • Experience mentoring others or acting as a technical sounding board

Nice extras (not deal-breakers):

  • VPN experience
  • Accessibility Services
  • Work in privacy-sensitive or regulated domains

How you’ll work

  • Hybrid role, Manchester-based
  • 2 days a week in the office, the rest flexible
  • Flexible start and finish times
  • Full home-working setup provided

Scottish Water
Multiple locations

Senior
£44,030 - £55,000
RECENTLY POSTED

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

Senior Digital Specialist .NET Developer (Flexibly located within Scotland)

It’s not every job where you make a difference for the people of Scotland—but that’s what’s behind every role here at Scottish Water. Our work keeps Scotland’s water flowing, from reservoir to tap and from sewer to treatment plant. Behind the scenes, we’re transforming how we do it, building smarter systems and stronger digital platforms that underpin vital public services.

Do you want your code to make a real-world impact? We’re looking for a talented .NET Developer to join our growing team—someone who thrives on challenge, is passionate about clean, high-quality code, and wants to work on meaningful projects that benefit communities across Scotland. In this role, you’ll help deliver innovative solutions across web, mobile, and cloud using the Microsoft stack and Azure platform. In return, you’ll be part of an open, collaborative environment with a genuine focus on work-life balance, where your skills will be supported and nurtured.

What you’ll do

As a .NET Developer, you’ll be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust .NET applications, including mobile apps and cloud services. You’ll contribute to the design, deployment, and management of Azure resources and make use of Azure DevOps to manage repositories and CI/CD pipelines. Collaboration is key here—you’ll work closely with product owners, designers, and fellow developers in Agile ceremonies, actively participating in code reviews, design discussions, and planning sessions. Sharing knowledge and mentoring others will be part of your routine, as well as maintaining a strong focus on user experience for both internal and external users.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone with proven experience as a .NET Full Stack Developer, with strong expertise in C# and the broader .NET ecosystem. You’ll bring hands-on experience in mobile application development—ideally .NET MAUI—and have solid knowledge of Azure DevOps and associated Azure services. Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines is essential, along with a passion for clean, maintainable code and well-architected systems. Communication skills are key—you’ll be expected to explain the “why” as well as the “how,” and confidently engage with stakeholders at all levels.

Additional experience with Xamarin, Agile/Scrum practices, Git, and modern version control workflows is advantageous. An understanding of how to build scalable, secure, cloud-native applications will be a definite plus.

Looking out for you

At Scottish Water, we look after our people. While the work we do is important, we also believe in supporting a healthy work-life balance. You’ll receive 38 days of annual leave (including public holidays), with the option to buy five more, and paid time off to volunteer in your community. We offer family-friendly policies for life events like adoption, maternity, and parental leave, and embrace flexible working for everyday life.

Looking ahead, our defined benefit, contribution pension scheme provides the security of knowing what you’ll get when you retire, and we offer life insurance too. On top of that, you’ll receive an annual company bonus and access to SW Splash—our rewards programme that helps you save on holidays, bills, and shopping.

This role will be a Grade 7. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £44,030. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £55,000.

We operate Balanced Hybrid working at Scottish Water and we encourage people to work half their time in a Scottish Water location. You can be based anywhere in Scotland, as long as you’re within commuting distance of one of our hubs in Edinburgh, Dundee, Inverness, or Stepps (near Glasgow).

If this opportunity excites you—or you know someone who would be a great fit—applications are open until midnight on the closing date of the 27th Feb 2026.

Please note that all job offers are conditional and subject to pre-employment screening, including references, criminal record checks, and license verification. These checks are conducted by a third party with your permission.
