• Conducting system design analysis to manage trade-offs of system parameters to characterise and specify robust product design
• Leading the decomposition of requirements to system and sub-system level and manage these in an approved toolset such as IBM DOORS Next
• Be a technical focus point with a holistic understanding of the system solution, leading analysis activities and system design decisions and providing guidance to own team
• Collaborating with specialists across different engineering disciplines including electronics, electrical, mechanical, software and radar subject matter experts to direct and realise overarching system design solutions
• Directing and undertaking system integration, test planning and execution
• Defining and articulating system acceptance strategies and acceptance evidence demonstrating system performance across a wide range of operational scenarios to internal and external stakeholders

Your skills and experiences:

• Experience of systems design, integration & test
• An understanding of Systems and Product lifecycles from concept through to delivery
• An understanding of a range of Engineering disciplines (Software, Mechanical, Electrical)
• An understanding of Radar Systems is desirable, although not essential if other complementary skills demonstrate a capacity to understand new technologies quickly and effectively
• Good inter-personal skills with the ability to communicate to all levels within the organisation and externally
• Experience of presenting both technical and non-technical information in a formal setting
• Degree (or equivalent) qualified in an engineering or science discipline

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

• Knowledge of external (over the air) communications systems in the maritime defence domain and have a comprehensive understanding of how such systems and associated activities interact with the overall platform (knowledge of the whole radio frequency spectrum, Data/Voice Communications and Systems Network Architecture). Platform and ideally sea experience in an operational, build, trials or in-service support environment in order to have gained an understanding of the operational needs and requirements of a Combat System, and to help be credible with the Customer and User
• Have good awareness of Product Safety and SHE
• Good communication skills and be able to interact with stakeholders

Desirable:

• Knowledge of the complete engineering lifecycle with some experience of operating in a number of phases of the Engineering Lifecycle

We are looking to recruit a Systems Engineer / Integration Engineer for our defence aerospace client based in Warton, near Preston, working on the European Common Radar System (ECRS). You will be working on the integration and test of complex radar systems and provide additional support in managing suppliers and acting as a communications bridge to the customer requirement.

The ECRS Mk2 Radome and Radar are complex equipment comprised of a number of individual items (supplied by Parker Meggitt Composites and Leonardo MW respectively) and are currently being developed to meet the challenging needs of the UK Customer. This role will involve working closely with Suppliers, Procurement, sub-system teams, systems integrators and engineering management. Analyse existing processes to identify suitable automation technologies. Develop equipment and workflows that maximise automation and performance. Work with suppliers to refine equipment design with a focus on safety, quality, and efficiency. Diagnose and resolve faults in automated systems and machinery. Manage and justify investments in new equipment, demonstrating clear ROI. Support quotation activity and planning for new business opportunities. Oversee budgets for projects, spare parts, and related expenses. Collaborate with Production Engineering and Maintenance to ensure smooth introduction of automated processes. Continuously improve production systems, machinery, and processes. Stay updated on engineering technology, product requirements, and modern manufacturing methods. Lead and support process improvement initiatives. Recommend and implement efficiency improvements across production lines. Introduce JIT methodologies and support future technology integration. Deliver projects in line with APQP requirements. Create and update engineering documents such as FMEAs and control plans. Direct Production Engineers in delivering line improvements. Plan optimal process flows and operator methods to maximise output and maintain quality. Set project targets and track outcomes effectively.Profile A successful Automation Engineer should have: * PLC Programming and Fault Finding (Allen Bradley, Siemens, Keyence etc.) to EAL / City & Guilds level or equivalent * Proven experience in the use and implementation of PLC systems and automated production processes. * Knowledge of robotics, pneumatic and mechanical systems used in production environments. * Proven ability to use a logical approach to problem solving and root cause corrective action (RCCA) * Familiarity with formal problem-solving techniques such as SGA, DMAIC, 7-step, PDCA, 5 Why and Fishbone Diagram. * Experience in creating and managing production engineering documentation in line with IATCF requirements (e.g. control plans, process flow diagrams, FMEA) * Knowledge of equipment OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), planned maintenance and spares control * Proven ability to implement project schedules and plan effectively and on time * Experience with capital investment for new or improved equipment * Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams. * University degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Automation Engineering or a related field (or equivalent) * Significant experience in electronics and / or automotive manufacturing is preferred. * Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Job Offer Salary: £40,000 to £52,000 (depending on experience).
