A Day in Your Neighbourhood

  • Fix what matters: Respond to maintenance calls across guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house. Complete repairs efficiently and safely, from plumbing and electrical to minor carpentry and HVAC troubleshooting.
  • Log & inspect: Carry out daily building and plant inspections. Record findings in logbooks, track meter readings, and use the Building Management System (BMS) where required.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experience Principle Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team. To provide Mechanical engineering support to projects through design to completion.   • Participate in, and where required chair, HazID, HazOP and HazCON’s as required by the client.
  • Provide engineered solutions to key project problems to satisfy clients expectations, project restrictions and budget considerations.
  • Provide Engineering support and technical expertise to the various sectors and projects.

What you’ll be doing

What we’re looking for

You’ll likely have:

  • Around 5–10 years’ experience in PCB or electronic hardware design
  • Strong experience with schematic capture and PCB development using Altium Designer or similar
  • Hands-on experience with board bring-up, lab debugging, and test
  • Experience designing digital and mixed-signal boards for commercial products
  • A solid understanding of interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, USB, Ethernet, or CAN
  • Good grounding in power design, EMC basics, grounding, decoupling, and manufacturability
  • A practical mindset and the ability to solve hardware problems effectively

Nice to have

  • Experience with processor-based or higher-speed digital designs
  • Exposure to FPGA-connected hardware
  • Experience supporting products through verification and into production
  • Familiarity with EMC or compliance testing

About the Company

This Electrical Design Engineer will report to the Design Lead and will work within the Capital Programme directorate based in either our Crawley or Maidstone office. You will be a permanent employee.

About the Role

Working across an Assets and Connections Portfolio, you will produce high quality electrical designs to an agreed scope. Designs to be delivered to cost, time and quality targets. All designs must meet Networks design and CDM standards. These designs could be for both non-contestable and contestable works.

Responsibilities

  • Produce Electrical Designs that can be constructed in compliance with standards and CDM requirements with little or no management.
  • Deliver designs, which conform to all relevant Codes of Practice and company and industry standards (for all designs relevant to Sub-stations), together with Electrical Design.
  • Contribute to the production of technical, commercial and contractual documents for procurement of engineering products.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations and company procedures.
  • Compliance with design assurance and audit processes.
  • Preparation of concept and developed design, from specifications and drawings within defined periods.
  • Provide an excellent service to the customer.
  • Work as a Team Player within larger diverse teams.
  • Collaborate with the operational teams to guarantee a smooth process from initial enquiry through to final energisation and project closure.
  • Comply with the requirements of the designer / principal designer as determined by the 2015 CDM Regulations.
  • Ensure design eliminates any hazards which may give rise to risks; and reduce risks from any remaining hazards (together with CDM).

Qualifications

  • Electrical engineering background.
  • Knowledge of power system and protection design at 132KV, 33KV, 11KV, and intermediate voltages.
  • Degree level or equivalent in engineering or science.
  • Work towards achieving Chartership.
  • Knowledge of design processes and DNO, ENA and International Design Standards including relevant operational aspects to deliver designs.
  • Work with external engineering organisations and customers/partners representing UKPN to best effect.
  • Peer review designs within specific area.
  • A good safety culture and sound understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations and their application in this role.
  • Work unsupervised, set and comply with own targets, and identify cost-saving solutions.
  • Good team working skills.
  • A good level of business, environmental, safety, financial, and regulatory awareness.
  • A general appreciation of financial reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of project management.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft desktop applications, in particular: Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient in the use of AutoCAD or Micro station.
  • Awareness of current and technological developments in distribution plant and equipment.
  • Broad knowledge of cables and overhead lines.
  • Input into construction ideas and techniques, which feed into Networks Green Action Plan.
