The Briggs Equipment Group is a leading provider of asset management and maintenance solutions across the UK and Ireland. Our 4-year apprentice engineer training programme offers them the chance to become a fully qualified ‘Lift Truck and Powered Access engineering technician’. As part of the team, Briggs Equipment Engineers diagnose faults, carry out servicing, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems across a diverse and expanding range of Materials Handling Equipment.

What will you be doing as an Engineer Apprentice:

  • Years 1 to 3 you will complete the 3-year apprenticeship qualification: Level 3 Lift Truck and Powered Access engineering technician standard.
    • Qualification will be completed at F-TEC Engineering Training in Swindon, England.
  • You will gain on-the job experience, starting with shadowing your mentor and other Engineers, progressing to performing tasks under supervision, then alongside qualified Engineers where your work will be checked and signed off. Year 4 is an ‘Improver’ year, where once you have achieved your apprenticeship qualification you will gain independent on-the-job practical experience, and undertake further internal training, to make the transition to become a fully qualified Engineer upon successful completion of the programme.
  • Work will be carried out on customer’s premises and at Briggs Equipment Group workshop locations within your specified region.

Upon successful completion of the 4-year programme and subject to satisfactory performance, you will be considered for a permanent contract as a fully qualified Engineer with starting salary expectations c.£30k+ dependent on location.

We encourage internal progression, and Briggs’ colleagues in roles including Regional Engineering Director, Regional Engineering Business Manager, Engineering Manager, Technical Trainer and Master Technician, all started their careers as apprentices.

What qualifications, skills and personal qualities you will need for this role:

  • Enthusiasm for all aspects of engineering, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic - i.e., hobbies related to maintenance/repair, work or voluntary experience, topics studied at school/college
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of health and safety
  • Basic IT skills i.e., email, websites, text documents

Summary of the Role

The Mechanical/Structural Engineer will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team within the Approval Authority, the primary purpose of the role is to directly support current operations and future programmes. Supporting nuclear facilities & the delivery of services across both HMNB Clyde sites (Faslane & Coulport).

The team consists of Mechanical, Civil, Building Services or Electrical Engineers and are responsible for the authorship, development, assessment, and maintenance of Engineering Design Substantiation for Clyde Nuclear Facilities, ensuring Design Intent, Critical Safety Factors and Safety and Operational Requirements are met and are consistent with current good practice and legislative/regulatory requirements

TASKS

Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of the suite of Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents.
Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of design changes/concessions
Presentation of Design substantiations, to client ‘Due Process’ nuclear safety committees
Production and development of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) Schedule, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life
Producing/assessing Periodic Review of Safety reports
Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders
Production of Independent Technical Review (ITA)/Independent Peer Review (IPR)
Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology
Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment
Producing robust technical justification to allow for relevant mechanical design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry
Review technical reports and other safety case submissions from external contractors.
Check and review calculations and technical documents written by other members of staff.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE

Essential:

5 Years Mechanical or Structural design experience
Experience of producing robust technical justification to allow for relevant design modifications to be authorised
Knowledge of key legislation and Standards
Familiarity with recognised industry technical guidance
Experience working on multi-discipline projects providing mechanical engineering inputDesirable:

Knowledge and experience in the design of Cranes and lifting devices
Ideal candidates would already have experience within Clyde or a similar high-hazard environment, but this is not essential
Experience applying appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear or similar high hazard industry

In this exciting double-days role you will be performing a split of planned and reactive maintenance in a busy industrial environment, whilst leading a close-knit team Engineers. This will include working on 3-phase machinery, lasers, PLC controls, hydraulics, drives and related equipment.

This role would suit an Electrical Supervisor or Senior Electrical Engineer from a heavy industrial or manufacturing background, looking for a long-term position within a stable organisation that is known for internal progression, investment in training and high standards of engineering excellence.

The Role:
* Performing planned and reactive maintenance on machinery
* Working on 3-phase machinery, hydraulics and PLC fault finding
* Leading a team of Electrical Engineers
* Monday to Friday, 6am - 2pm, then 2pm - 11pm, rotating weekly

The Person:
* Electrical Supervisor / Senior Electrical Engineer
* 18th Edition qualified
* Experience within heavy industry or manufacturing
