TECH-AGNOSTIC ROLE

Power electronics is at an inflection point, and so are the tools and practices used to design it — we want engineers who are leaning into that change, not looking past it. If you're energised by the idea of rethinking how hardware development is done in a startup setting, this role will give you the canvas to do exactly that. COMPANY INFORMATION QPT was founded in 2019 with a mission to help the world use power more efficiently. Using power more efficiently is crucial in tackling the climate crisis. QPT focuses on a major source of carbon production into the atmosphere; the burning of fossil fuels to power electric motors that use 45% of the world’s electricity. Headquartered in Cambridge UK and with its design centre in Linlithgow, Scotland, QPT is privately funded company focused on the design of power electronics systems, initially applicable to the industrial motor space but equally suited to AI data centres, automotive (EV), HVAC and consumer white goods products. It is growing quickly and looking to expand its already strong team with like minded team players. WHY JOIN QPT? Work on technology that directly addresses climate change while tackling some of the most challenging problems in power electronics. Our platform technology approach means you'll work across multiple high-impact domains - from industrial motor drives to AI data centres to high-performance computing thermal management. As a member of a small team (10+), you'll have significant autonomy and direct impact on product direction. We combine cutting-edge power electronics with modern development practices, giving you the opportunity to work at the intersection of power and RF electronics where precision and performance matter most. We're backed by strong partnerships (ABB, onsemi, Nidec, Infineon) and targeting Series A funding in Q3-Q4 2026. This is your opportunity to join at the ground floor of a company with massive potential (£106-131B TAM) and real-world impact. JOB PURPOSE Specify, design, implement and validate power electronics hardware to align with the company roadmap and to the required performance, schedule, budget and quality. KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES As a Hardware Engineer, you will be responsible for the following: · Specifying power electronics systems or subsystems to enable the resulting hardware to be designed and validated as complying with requirements. · Architecting and designing the hardware using modern development practices (including AI-assisted workflows where relevant) and company standard tools and processes to meet the requirements, including those related to electrical and thermal performance, EMC, safety and other aspects needing compliance. · Implementing the schematic design and PCB layout. · Ensuring that the design is manufacturable and meets the cost model for the system. · Generating and verifying rapid prototypes to prove new concepts prior to committing to a full design. · Thermal and electrical simulation of the key aspects of the design and confirming that it fits within the envelope of the overall system. · Consideration for the mechanical aspects of the design and ensuring that it fits within the form-factor and meets the thermal requirements. · Overseeing the prototype manufacturing process to ensure that third party partner production queries are quickly answered. · Ensuring EMC and safety certification/compliance for the product, including the coordination of third party test houses where required. PERSON SPECIFICATION Personal Attributes · Self-directed learner who stays current with emerging development tools and practices · Pragmatic problem-solver who values shipping working solutions over perfect designs · Comfortable with ambiguity and able to make progress with incomplete information · Excited about leveraging AI tools to multiply productivity · Reliable and flexible attitude · Comfortable in a fast changing environment · Proactive and positive approach to work · Good communicator · Strong attention to detail · Values being part of a team driving for excellence in an exciting new design space.
