Safety Engineer Job Description:
An opportunity has arisen for an engineer to exploit their safety engineering skills to influence the safety aspects of one of our technically complex products. While exploring the boundaries of best practice, this will involve optimising the effort devoted to safety assurance, with the goal of balancing safety against the inherently lethal attributes required of complex weapon systems.
The role is to deliver the safety analysis and assurance that will enable one of our products to be integrated onto a small range of platforms. This will involve working closely with internal delivery teams, as well as UK and non-UK customers. The successful candidate will be required to liaise with key stakeholders (including, but not necessarily limited to, external customers, the platform authorities and stakeholders) to help define the safety boundary for the development of safety claims and take a leading role in the production and evolution of the associated Safety Management Plans and delivery of the required safety analyses. The main emphasis will be on ensuring that the available evidence fulfils the need and, if gaps are identified, defining suitable mitigations.

In support of this, experience of the following is expected:

  • Hazard identification exercises (such as SWIFT and HAZOP);
  • Hazard management and risk analysis, including functional failure, fault tree and event tree analyses;
  • Thorough understanding and experience of how the hazard analysis process integrates with the system engineering process to influence the design.
  • Construction of safety arguments and their contribution to ALARP statements and authoring of Safety Cased Reports;
  • Provision of support to internal and external project Safety Panels and Committees;
  • Liaising with other functions in order to derive safety requirements and hazards;
  • Working with systems teams in order to demonstrate satisfaction of safety requirements;
  • Understanding of DEF-STAN 00-056 (and, ideally, other similar international standards), including the ability to define and write Safety Management Plans that meet its requirements;
  • Detailed electronic engineering experience is highly desirable (education to degree or HND level or a comparable level of experience is preferred). Experience of other engineering disciplines (especially software) is also desirable.
  • IEC 61508/DO178C/DO-254 experience (desirable).

iOS Developer / iOS Engineer / Mobile Developer / Mobile Engineer

Not every iOS role is about polishing UI or shipping the next consumer app.

This one is for an iOS engineer who enjoys owning the technical direction, working close to the platform, and dealing with the realities of performance, reliability and long-lived apps and SDKs in production.

Despite the title, this is not a people-management role. It’s a hands-on position for a senior iOS engineer who wants responsibility, influence and interesting technical problems - without stepping away from code.

What you’ll be working on

You’ll take ownership of iOS apps and SDKs used in real-world, data-heavy environments, where stability, correctness and long-term maintainability really matter.

Day to day, you will:

  • Own the architecture and technical direction of iOS apps and SDKs
  • Design and build complex features using Swift, with some Objective-C and C++
  • Tackle challenges around networking, performance, stability and edge cases
  • Stay ahead of iOS and Apple platform changes, shaping how the team responds
  • Support SDK integrations and help resolve tricky production issues
  • Run design and code reviews, and help raise engineering standards
  • Make pragmatic use of modern tooling, including AI-assisted development tools, to improve quality and reduce busywork

Who this role suits

This role is a good fit if you:

  • Like being the technical point of reference for iOS
  • Enjoy thinking about architecture and long-term platform health
  • Want influence and ownership without line management
  • Are comfortable going deep when things break in production

You’ll likely bring:

  • Strong experience building and shipping iOS apps in Swift (with some Objective-C)
  • Solid understanding of iOS networking (HTTP(S), TLS, sockets, proxies)
  • Experience integrating or working alongside native C++ libraries
  • Good knowledge of iOS SDK/API design, versioning and supporting external integrators
  • Familiarity with Apple Developer policies and how OS changes impact apps
  • Strong debugging skills (crashes, performance, battery) and sensible testing practices

How you’ll work

  • Hybrid role, Manchester-based
  • 2 days per week in the office, the rest flexible
  • Flexible start and finish times
  • Full home-working setup provided
