Join our dedicated team at Bible Society as a Web Development Manager, where you’ll lead a skilled group of developers in managing our web platform. As the leader of our Web Development Team, you’ll play a crucial role in setting strong foundations for our digital presence and ensuring our products are reliable, effective and evolving. The team are responsible for software development across websites, apps, and digital initiatives, encompassing both front and backend technologies.
As the Web Development Manager, you will have the chance to lead a talented team of developers, actively engage in the assessment of emerging technologies, and provide support in transitioning to a new headless CMS. You’ll collaborate closely with fellow developers, designers, directors, and technical stakeholders, fostering a culture of excellence and creativity. Management and Planning • Operationally responsible for the organisation’s web development activity • Support the implementation of the organisation’s digital strategy and help to shape it, working closely with the Director of Digital Strategy and Head of Technology • Own and maintain the organisation’s plan for development of the wider web platform together with the Director of Digital Strategy and Head of Technology • Product and road map owner for the CMS working to meet the needs of stakeholders across the organisation • Manage all aspects of the Web Development team’s work, ensuring a detailed development plan is established and followed
Deliver tasks on schedule as agreed with the Director of Digital Strategy by breaking down tasks into sub-tasks and effectively managing their timely delivery • Work with project managers and stakeholders to ensure you understand the aims of their project and add digital awareness and intelligence
Technical skills and programming • Be proficient in modern web technologies and programming languages and keep abreast of changes in the digital space • Write and maintain high quality code in conjunction with the other developers in the team • Monitor the organisation’s digital infrastructure and work with suppliers to ensure that the infrastructure is reliable and fit for purpose • Customisation of our Content Management System (CMS) • Guide and work with developers to grow their skills in relevant web technologies and programming languages • Understand, support and maintain legacy systems for transitioning to our new platforms • Oversee the testing phase of all updates and new developments prior to go-live • Research, develop and maintain an effective testing solution for our programmatic work • Setup, maintenance and support of our hosting and Bible Society web server including the setup of domains, sub domains and URLs • Work with technologies including Linux, Apache, Nginx, MySQL/MariaDB, PHP, Javascript, Typescript, React, Next.js • Ensure that comprehensive documentation exists for Bible Society’s web platforms • Developing skills in new programming languages and tools to expand our digital capabilities • Actively follow and learn new cutting-edge digital technologies and trends, keeping up-to-date with digital best practices and usability / accessibility guidelines
Stakeholder Management • Work with the Systems and Technology team to ensure integration of the web platform with the organisation’s CRM and ensure online and offline integration of any new development project • Where needed, support external contractors to ensure on time and high-quality project outcomes • Integrate relevant third-party systems and API’s such as payment providers and the Bible API • Act as a core member of the Bible Society Technical Governance group supporting Bible Society’s technical strategy • Lead the Web Platform Governance Group working with and advising Directors on Bible Society’s digital architecture
Team Management • Conduct monthly 1-2-1 meetings with direct reports as well as managing, supporting and motivating staff. Create a positive working environment where direct reports can flourish as an individual and within the team • Lead team meetings and workshops and deliver presentations as appropriate Undertake annual and quarterly PDRs to encourage the development of direct reports as well as to meet the changing needs of our organisation • Praise strong performance while dealing with underperformance promptly and directly • Provide support with departmental and project budgets
General • Adhere to our policies and standards in all areas of your work • Carry out ad hoc duties that may be required to ensure we maintain our effectiveness • Ensure Bible Society’s brand values and identity are reflected in the department’s communications. • Participate fully in the corporate life of Bible Society, by attending All Staff Meetings and departmental meetings as required
