Your role

Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) is looking for an Infrastructure Engineer (Security) to join our Digital Services team.

This is a hands-on technical role with cyber security as your primary focus. You will work closely with the Lead Infrastructure Engineer (Security) and wider Digital Services teams to design, implement, secure, and support our infrastructure across both on-premises and cloud environments.

Youll help strengthen GMCAs security posture through proactive engineering, operational security activities, and contribution to projects that modernise our technical landscape.

About you

Youll bring practical experience working in IT infrastructure, with a strong focus on cyber security. Youre comfortable operating across both cloud and on-prem environments and enjoy working on a mix of operational security, engineering improvements, and project delivery.

You will have:

• Experience implementing, supporting, maintaining, and troubleshooting infrastructure with a security focus.
• Experience contributing to infrastructure projects (cloud and/or on-prem).
• A solid understanding of cyber security principles and best practices aligned to frameworks such as NCSC, NIST, and CAF.
• A general awareness of networking and firewall concepts.

Role purpose/summary

We are seeking an experienced OpenShift Architecture and Migration Design Specialist to lead the design, planning, and execution of OpenShift architectures and migration strategies. The ideal candidate will have expertise in designing robust, scalable, and secure OpenShift environments, as well as creating and implementing migration plans for transitioning workloads and applications to OpenShift. Experience with VMware and Pure Storage is essential to ensure seamless integration with existing infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

Architecture Design:

• Design the target architecture for OpenShift, including cluster topology, networking, and storage solutions.
• Define and implement best practices for OpenShift cluster setup, including multi-zone and multi-region deployments.
• Ensure the architecture supports high availability, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery.

Migration Design and Optimization:

• Assess existing infrastructure, applications, and workloads to determine migration readiness.
• Develop detailed migration plans, including strategies for containerization, workload transfer, and data migration.

• Identify and mitigate risks associated with the migration process.

VMware and Pure Storage Integration design:

• Design and implement OpenShift solutions that integrate seamlessly with VMware virtualized environments.
• Leverage VMware tools (eg, vSphere, vCenter, NSX) to optimize OpenShift deployments.
• Configure and manage Pure Storage solutions (eg, FlashArray, FlashBlade) to provide high-performance, scalable storage for OpenShift workloads.
• Ensure compatibility and performance optimization between OpenShift, VMware, and Pure Storage.

CI/CD Pipelines and DevOps Workflows:

• Design and implement CI/CD pipelines tailored for the OpenShift environment.
• Integrate DevOps workflows with OpenShift-native tools and third-party solutions.
• Automate deployment, scaling, and monitoring processes to streamline application delivery.

Scalability and Security:

• Ensure the architecture and migration plans are scalable to meet future growth and workload demands.
• Implement security best practices, including role-based access control (RBAC), network policies, and encryption.
• Conduct regular security assessments and audits to maintain compliance with organizational standards.

Collaboration and Documentation:

• Work closely with development, DevOps, and operations teams to align architecture and migration plans with business needs.
• Provide detailed documentation of the architecture, migration strategies, workflows, and configurations.
• Offer technical guidance and training to teams on OpenShift architecture, migration, and best practices.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• Strong experience in designing and implementing OpenShift architectures and migration strategies.
• In-depth knowledge of Kubernetes, containerization, and orchestration.
• Expertise in VMware tools and technologies (eg, vSphere, vCenter, NSX).
• Hands-on experience with Pure Storage solutions (eg, FlashArray, FlashBlade).
• Expertise in networking concepts (eg, ingress, load balancing, DNS) and storage solutions (eg, persistent volumes, dynamic provisioning).

I am currently seeking 1 Network Infrastructure Architect to join a long-term project starting as a 4 month contract, on-site in Cumbria.

Given the nature of the role and security requirements, candidates must be a sole UK national and hold active Security Clearance.

Responsibilities include:

• Lead the design, planning, and on-site delivery of network infrastructure projects.
• Manage comms room design, including rack layouts, patching strategies, cable management, and structured cabling (copper and fibre).
• Create and maintain High-Level and Low-Level Designs (HLD/LLD), installation standards, and technical documentation.
